Gremlin 1 is required for macrophage M2 polarization [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, 2023
We show here that gremlin 1 potentiated M2 polarization of mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) in response to the Th2 cytokines IL4 and IL13. Genetic depletion of Grem1 in BMDMs inhibited M2 polarization while exogenous gremlin 1 partially rescued this effect.

Molecular Mechanisms That Influence the Macrophage M1–M2 Polarization Balance [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2014
As an essential component of innate immunity, macrophages have multiple functions in both inhibiting or promoting cell proliferation and tissue repair. Diversity and plasticity are hallmarks of macrophages. Classical M1 and alternative M2 activation of macrophages, mirroring the Th1-Th2 polarization of T cells, represent two extremes of a dynamic ...

Branched-chain amino acid catabolism promotes M2 macrophage polarization [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
IntroductionDuring an immune response, macrophages undergo systematic metabolic rewiring tailored to support their functions. Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism has been reported to modulate macrophage function; however, its role in macrophage ...

SERPINB10 promotes macrophage M2 polarization and airway inflammation in asthma

open access: yesRespiratory Research
Macrophage M2 polarization plays a critical role in type 2 airway inflammation in asthma. We previously reported that serine peptidase inhibitor, clade B, member 10 (SERPINB10) promotes airway eosinophilic inflammation in asthma. To investigate the role of SERPINB10 in macrophage M2 polarization and airway inflammation in asthma. The expression of ...

Microglia Polarization From M1 to M2 in Neurodegenerative Diseases [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2022
Microglia-mediated neuroinflammation is a common feature of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and multiple sclerosis (MS). Microglia can be categorized into two opposite types: classical (M1) or alternative (M2), though there’s a continuum of different ...

Polarized M2 macrophages in dogs with visceral leishmaniasis [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Parasitology, 2016
The objective of the present study was to analyze the skin (nasal surface and ear regions), lymph nodes (popliteal and pre-scapular), spleen and liver of dogs with visceral leishmaniasis (VL), in order to investigate the relationship between the parasite load measured as DNA copy number of Alpha gene of DNA polymerase of Leishmania infantum by ...

M2 macrophage polarization: a potential target in pain relief

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2023
Pain imposes a significant urden on patients, affecting them physically, psychologically, and economically. Despite numerous studies on the pathogenesis of pain, its clinical management remains suboptimal, leading to the under-treatment of many pain patients.

M2 polarization enhances silica nanoparticle uptake by macrophages [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2015
While silica nanoparticles have enabled numerous industrial and medical applications, their toxicological safety requires further evaluation. Macrophages are the major cell population responsible for nanoparticle clearance in vivo. The prevailing macrophage phenotype largely depends on the local immune status of the host.
