Behavioral thermoregulatory response to maitotoxin in mice
Toxicon, 1998Many types of marine algal toxins induce marked hypothermic responses in mice. However, it is not known if the thermoregulatory response to these toxins results from dysfunction in the control of core temperature (Tc) or is a coordinated response to lower Tc as occurs with a variety of xenobiotic insults.

Activation of calcium channels by Maitotoxin
1987Publisher Summary This chapter describes three techniques that enhance the understanding of the action of maitotoxin by using 45Ca2+ to monitor calcium ion flux. The techniques are not new but are adapted for use with viable dispersed anterior pituitary cells in suspension.

A feeding study to probe the uptake of Maitotoxin by snapper (Pagrus auratus)
The role of ciguatoxins (CTX) in Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) has been investigated previously, but little is known about Maitotoxin (MTX) and whether it plays a significant role in causing human illness.

Modulation of a calcium-activated chloride current by Maitotoxin
Toxicon, 1999The effect of Maitotoxin (MTX) on the calcium-activated chloride current (ICl-Ca) from Xenopus oocytes was studied, applying the two-electrode voltage clamp technique. MTX increased the current amplitude at all the voltages explored and reduced the time to reach the maximum current level (time to peak). At low toxin concentrations (15 pM), both effects

Maitotoxin-induced membrane current in neuroblastoma cells
Brain Research, 1987Maitotoxin (MTX) is a potent marine toxin isolated from the toxic dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus toxicus. We have examined the possibility of MTX activating calcium channels using cultured neuroblastoma cells (N1E-115). MTX (10 ng/ml) produced a depolarization of the membrane, which was prevented by the removal of Ca2+ from the external medium.

Complete Relative Stereochemistry of Maitotoxin
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 1996By addressing the relative stereochemistry of the four acyclic portions via organic synthesis, the complete relative stereochemistry of maitotoxin (MTX) has been established as 1B. The relative stereochemistry of the C.1−C.15 portion was elucidated via a two-phase approach: (1) the synthesis of the eight diastereomers possible for model C ...

Mechanisms underlying the hemolytic and ichthyotoxic activities of maitotoxin
Natural Toxins, 1999Maitotoxin (MTX), a putative Ca(2+) channel activator produced by the dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus showed extremely potent hemolytic and ichthyotoxic activities. Hemolysis of 1% mouse blood cell suspension in saline occurred at 15 nM of MTX.
