Antibodies to maitotoxin elicited by immunization with toxin-fragment conjugates
Toxicon, 1996Maitotoxin is a water-soluble polyether toxin produced by the benthic dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus toxicus. Toxin fragments generated by periodate oxidation were conjugated to keyhole limpet hemocyanin, and the resulting immunogens were used to elicit maitotoxin-specific antibodies in mice.

Comparison of maitotoxin with thromboxane A2 in rabbit platelet activation
Toxicon, 1999Maitotoxin (MTX), a Ca2+ channel-activating marine toxin, caused shape change followed by aggregation in rabbit platelets, like U46619, a thromboxane A2 analogue. Although both drugs failed to cause aggregation in the absence of external Ca2+, U46619, but not maitotoxin, elicited shape change in the absence of external Ca2+.

Maitotoxin, a cationic channel activator.
Neurobiology (Budapest, Hungary), 1998Maitotoxin (MTX), a water soluble polyether obtained from the marine dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus is one of the entities responsible for Ciguatera, a form of seafood poisoning. This toxin is a potent activator of changes in the intracellular Ca2+ concentrations of cells from a wide variety of organisms.

The Cellular Mechanism of Action of Maitotoxin and Ciguatoxin
1990To clarify the cellular mechanism of action of maitotoxin and ciguatoxin, the effects of both the toxins were studied using isolated cardiac myocytes and a pheochromocytoma cell line (PC12). Maitotoxin caused an increase in norepinephrine release from PC12 cells and Ca2+ influx into them, and induced a Ca2+-dependent arrhythmogenic effect on cardiac ...
