Nitrogen fertilization rates to maximize winter malting barley yield while meeting protein requirements in Ohio

open access: yesAgricultural &Environmental Letters, Volume 11, Issue 1, June 2026.
Abstract Due to the craft beer industry, there is an emerging need for winter malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) nitrogen (N) rate recommendations in Ohio. An experiment was conducted at seven site‐years to identify the optimum spring N application rate to maximize barley grain yield while maintaining protein requirements for malting.

Multi‐environment evaluation and genomic prediction of agronomic traits in the southern US rice genepool

open access: yesThe Plant Genome, Volume 19, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract The southern United States is responsible for 80% of the country's production of rice, approximately half of which is exported. Understanding genotypic and environmental factors impacting the historical performance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) is important for directing research efforts to optimize production of this globally important crop.

Exotic alleles from the wild Hordeum spontaneum contribute to drought tolerance and grain quality in modern Hordeum vulgare

open access: yesPlant Stress
Conventional breeding relies on genetic variability in crop germplasm and wild species. This study evaluated 137 barley Recombinant Chromosome Substitution Lines (RCSLs), originating from crossing a drought and salinity-tolerant wild Hordeum spontaneum ...

MALTING TIME OF BREWING BARLEY GRAIN AS A FACTOR MODIFYING THE QUALITY OF PILSNER TYPE MALT [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Central European Agriculture, 2010
The research was aimed at determining the effect of malting time of grain of selected varieties of brewing barley cultivated in Poland on the quality of Pilsner type malts, with consideration given to their extractivity and natural losses.

The SD1 locus affects primary seed dormancy in winter malting barley

open access: yesThe Plant Genome, Volume 19, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Preharvest sprouting (PHS) resistance and seed dormancy are key targets for malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in environments with a high probability of rain events at harvest. Characterization has been limited in winter malting barley compared to spring malting barley in the United States.

Quality of malting barley grain in the Czech Republic, harvest 2025

open access: yesKvasný průmysl
Within the framework of malting barley quality monitoring, the quality of malting barley from the 2025 harvest in the Czech Republic was evaluated in relation to the course of the growing season, which was characterised by pronounced climatic stress ...

Advances in Wine Yeast Autolysis: Biochemical and Molecular Mechanisms, and the Release of Organic Compounds in White and Sparkling Wines—An Updated Review

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Wine yeasts play a central role in alcoholic fermentation and significantly contribute to the sensory attributes of wines through cellular autolysis during lees aging (sur lie), especially in white wines. This process releases organic compounds that alter the wine's chemical and sensory profile.
