Obese patients, and diet induced obese rodents, exhibit elevated palmitate in the blood stream and hypothalamus. Elevated palmitate has been found to attenuate hypothalamic insulin signaling, and this effect is thought to be mediated through endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress.
