Leptin is required for hypothalamic regulation of miRNAs targeting POMC 3’UTR

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2015
The central nervous system monitors modifications in metabolic parameters or hormone levels and elicits adaptive responses such as food intake regulation. Particularly, within the hypothalamus, leptin modulates the activity of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)

KNDy neurons as an indirect target of insulin‐like growth factor‐1

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 38, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARH) that coexpress kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin (KNDy neurons) are considered the gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH) pulse generator necessary for fertility. KNDy neurons are also metabolic sensors controlling the hypothalamic–pituitary‐gonadal (HPG) axis.

Targeting Melasma: Innovations in Pigment Deposition and Photoaging in Cosmetic Dermatology

open access: yesJournal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Volume 25, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Melasma is a chronic, relapsing hyperpigmentation disorder driven by complex interactions among genetic predisposition, hormonal fluctuations, UV exposure, oxidative stress, inflammation, and photoaging. Its psychosocial impact is substantial, especially among women with darker skin types, and treatment remains challenging due to ...

Funktionelle Konsequenzen von Mutationen im Melanocortin-4-Rezeptorgen bei adipösen Kindern und Jugendlichen [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006

Development of the Hypothalamic Melanocortin System

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2013
The melanocortin system is a critical component of the forebrain and hindbrain regulatory systems involved in energy balance. This system is composed of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons that act, in part, through the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R ...

Melanocortins, Melanocortin Receptors and Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesBrain Science, 2017
The melanocortins and their receptors have been extensively investigated for their roles in the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis, but to a lesser extent in immune cells and in the nervous system outside the hypothalamic axis.
