Human adult cells are protected from complement-induced damage in part by membrane cofactor protein (MCP, CD46). To examine fetal characteristics which might influence autoantibody-mediated diseases acquired in utero, such as heart block in neonatal lupus, the tissue expression of MCP was studied.

Production and characterization of a pig line transgenic for human membrane cofactor protein

A pig line transgenic for human membrane cofactor protein (hMCP) has been established. Offspring from the founder were produced by crossing the founder with pigs heterozygous for the human decay accelerating factor (hDAF) transgene. As a result, pigs transgenic for both hMCP and hDAF have been produced.

Identification and characterization of membrane cofactor protein of human spermatozoa

Abstract Membrane cofactor protein (MCP) regulates C activation by serving as a cofactor for the cleavage of C3b and C4b by the serine protease factor I. An MCP-like molecule on the inner acrosomal membrane of human spermatozoa has been characterized. Three mAb and a rabbit polyclonal antibody against MCP recognized the sperm protein.

Membrane cofactor protein

MCP serves to down-regulate the activation of complement on host tissue. It performs this function by serving as a cofactor for the factor I-mediated cleavage of C3b and C4b. MCP is most likely an intrinsic regulator, i.e., it primarily protects its home cell.

AbstractMembrane cofactor protein (MCP, CD46) is an integral protein that serves as a cofactor for factor I in inactivating C3b/C4b deposited on the same cell‐membrane as C3bi/C4c+C4d. This C3b/C4b inactivation is closely associated with self‐protection of host cells from autologous complement attack.
