Physical Fitness Is Negatively Associated With DNA Methylation‐Based Risk of Aging‐Related Diseases

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 4, April 2026.
We found 33 significant associations between DNA methylation–based protein level estimates (EpiScores) and fitness traits in older adults. Then we found 51 associations between fitness traits and chronic age‐related diseases, enabling a workflow for evaluating patient‐level disease risk by using DNA methylation and fitness measurements.

Artificial escape from XCI by DNA methylation editing of the CDKL5 gene. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
A significant number of X-linked genes escape from X chromosome inactivation and are associated with a distinct epigenetic signature. One epigenetic modification that strongly correlates with X-escape is reduced DNA methylation in promoter regions. Here,

USP44, ZNF454, and GPRC5B ctDNA Methylation Markers in Breast Cancer: Limited Clinical Relevance for Disease Monitoring and Tumor Characteristics

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology, Volume 22, Issue 2, Page 260-269, April 2026.
We selected breast cancer‐specific DNA methylation markers using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We analyzed the methylation and expression patterns of candidate genes in breast cancer cell lines, ctDNA, and tissue samples. The relationship between ctDNA methylation markers and the clinicopathological features of breast cancer patients was investigated.

The use of different types of networks, alone and in combination, for drug target identification

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 8, Page 1653-1662, April 2026.
Current therapeutic approaches often focus on targeting clinical symptoms or peripheral phenotypes rather than the underlying molecular mechanisms, or endophenotypes, that drive diseases. While symptom‐based drugs can alleviate discomfort, they do not necessarily alter disease progression and may overlook opportunities for prevention or early ...

Epigenetic mechanisms and therapeutic innovations in chronic pain‐associated neuropsychiatric co‐morbidities

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 7, Page 1313-1340, April 2026.
Abstract Chronic pain, marked by nociceptive sensitization and maladaptive neuroplasticity, affects 30% of the global population with escalating socioeconomic burdens. Epidemiological data show a 2‐3‐fold increase in neuropsychiatric co‐morbidities among individuals with chronic pain, where epigenetic dysregulation serves as a key mechanism linking ...

Integration of epigenetics into ecotoxicology: insights and fundamental research needs

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 2, Page 826-847, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Epigenetics refers to heritable changes in genome function that occur without direct alterations to the DNA sequence. A multitude of environmental contaminants can influence the epigenetic marks of a genome. Changes of epigenetic marks including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non‐coding RNAs can induce alterations at the gene ...

Molecular and epigenetic responses to crowding stress in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) skeletal muscle

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundChronic stress is a critical challenge in fish aquaculture, adversely affecting growth, health, and overall productivity. Among the most significant chronic stressors in intensive farming is crowding, which triggers the release of cortisol, the

Genome‐Wide DNA Methylation Patterns Predict Age in the Zebra Shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) and Provide Insight Into the Evolution of Vertebrate Aging

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 7, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Epigenomic changes are a hallmark of aging, and DNA methylation (DNAm) has emerged as the most reliable molecular marker of an individual's age. Genome‐wide patterns of age‐associated hypo‐ and hypermethylation have been applied to generate predictive models (i.e., “epigenetic clocks”) capable of estimating chronological age in an increasingly

A dynamic epigenetic perspective on above‐ and belowground phenotypic responses to drought: Insights from global DNA methylation in Erodium cicutarium

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 28, Issue 3, Page 722-731, April 2026.
Our factorial experimental design investigates the relationships between DNA methylation, plant development and individual fitness under stress in Erodium cicutarium. We found that epigenetic modifications associated to 5‐azacytidine seed treatment desynchronized plant growth and delayed flowering.
