The endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein complex (EMC) is an evolutionarily conserved, multi‐subunit transmembrane protein complex crucial to membrane protein biogenesis and cellular protein quality control. This review systematically examines the structure, functions and disease‐associated regulatory mechanisms of EMC across multiple organ systems ...

Fluorescence Enhancement of a Microbial Rhodopsin via Electronic Reprogramming [PDF]
The engineering of microbial rhodopsins with enhanced fluorescence is of great importance in the expanding field of optogenetics. Here we report the discovery of two mutants (W76S/Y179F and L83Q) of a sensory rhodopsin from the cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC7120 with opposite fluorescence behavior.

ABSTRACT The existence of prokaryotes escaping filtration through 0.2‐μm filters has been known for decades. Such ‘filterable’ prokaryotes (hereafter ‘FP’) might include true ultra‐small groups (i.e., ultramicrobacteria), but also cells that miniaturize temporally as a physiological strategy to persist under unfavourable conditions, representing a ...

Beyond red/far‐red sensing: phytochrome perception of the marine light field by microalgae
Summary Phytochromes (PHYs) are a major group of photoreceptors, described as red and far‐red light sensors in land plants. Recent genomic and metagenomic explorations have revealed the presence of PHYs also in various eukaryotic microalgae originating from distinct endosymbiotic events.

The role of microbial rhodopsins in the evolution and adaptation of a marine diatom [PDF]
Microbial rhodopsins have been identified in bacteria, archaea, viruses, and eukaryotic phytoplankton, but their in-vivo function in the latter group has largely remained elusive.

Quantum biology: From mechanisms to medicine
Quantum biology across systems: from mechanisms to medicine. This graphical abstract highlights how quantum phenomena‐coherence, tunnelling and spin dynamics‐shape fundamental biological processes and point towards quantum‐informed medicine. In photosynthesis, quantum coherence supports near‐lossless exciton transport across pigment–protein complexes ...

ABSTRACT Fragilariopsis cylindrus is a key diatom in the Southern Ocean, where low iron and manganese availability constrain primary production and biogeochemical activity. The molecular mechanisms used by polar diatoms, including F. cylindrus, to cope with trace metal limitations remain largely unexplored.
