Proteostasis of organelles in aging and disease

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Cells rely on regulated proteostasis mechanisms to keep their internal compartments functioning properly. When these mechanisms fail, damaged proteins accumulate, disrupting organelles, such as the nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi, and lysosomes, as well as membraneless organelles, such as stress granules, processing bodies, the ...

Impact of Carvedilol on the Mitochondrial Damage Induced by Hypoxanthine and Xantine Oxidase - What Role in Myocardial Ischemia and Reperfusion? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 20, Issue 5, Page 1253-1269, May 2026.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Exploiting metabolic adaptations to overcome dabrafenib treatment resistance in melanoma cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 20, Issue 5, Page 1202-1219, May 2026.
We show that dabrafenib‐resistant melanoma cells undergo mitochondrial remodeling, leading to elevated respiration and ROS production balanced by stronger antioxidant defenses. This altered redox state promotes survival despite mitochondrial damage but renders resistant cells highly vulnerable to ROS‐inducing compounds such as PEITC, highlighting redox

When should MELAS (Mitochondrial myopathy, Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like episodes) be the diagnosis?

open access: yesArquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria
Mitochondrial myopathy, Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a rare mitochondrial disorder. Diagnostic criteria for MELAS include typical manifestations of the disease: stroke-like episodes, encephalopathy, evidence of ...

Impact of carvedilol on the mitochondrial damage induced by hypoxanthine and xantine oxidase: what role in myocardial ischemia and reperfusion? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
OBJECTIVES: The cardioprotective effects of carvedilol (CV) may be explained in part by interactions with heart mitochondria. The objective of this work was to study the protection afforded by CV against oxidative stress induced in isolated heart ...

SIRT4 positively regulates autophagy via ULK1, but independently of HDAC6 and OPA1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 16, Issue 5, Page 870-884, May 2026.
Cells expressing SIRT4 (H161Y), a catalytically inactive mutant of the sirtuin SIRT4, fail to upregulate LC3B‐II and exhibit a reduced autophagic flux under stress conditions. Interestingly, SIRT4(H161Y) promotes phosphorylation of ULK1 at S638 and S758 that are associated with inhibition of autophagy initiation.

Bioquímica da esquistossomose mansônica: V - atividade mitocondrial em fígados e rins de sagüis (Callitrix penicillata) infestados pelo Schistosoma mansoni Biochemistry of mansonic schistosomiasis: V - mitochondrial activity in livers and kidneys of marmosets (Callitrix penicillata) infected with Schistosoma mansoni
