Hybridization and extensive mitochondrial introgression among fire salamanders in peninsular Italy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Discordance between mitochondrial and nuclear patterns of population genetic structure is providing key insights into the eco-evolutionary dynamics between and within species, and their assessment is highly relevant to biodiversity monitoring practices ...

Mitochondrial dynamics and cancer

open access: yesSeminars in Cancer Biology, 2009
Mitochondrial morphology is regulated by continuous fusion and fission events that are essential for maintaining a normal mitochondrial function. If the last years have witnessed major discoveries in the characterization of the fission and fusion machineries, little is known about the physiological role of mitochondrial dynamics.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Mitofusin-Mediated Mitochondrial Fusion Inhibits Pseudorabies Virus Infection in Porcine Cells

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences
Background: Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that undergo fusion/fission dynamics, and emerging evidence has established that mitochondrial dynamics plays a crucial regulatory role in the process of viral infection.

Acute and chronic effects of resistance training on skeletal muscle markers of mitochondrial remodeling in older adults

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2020
We investigated the acute and chronic effects of resistance training (RT) on skeletal muscle markers of mitochondrial content and remodeling in older, untrained adults.

Pink1 and Parkin regulate Drosophila intestinal stem cell proliferation during stress and aging. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) maintain the midgut epithelium in Drosophila melanogaster Proper cellular turnover and tissue function rely on tightly regulated rates of ISC division and appropriate differentiation of daughter cells.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Excess Branched-Chain Amino Acids Suppress Mitochondrial Function and Biogenic Signaling but Not Mitochondrial Dynamics in a Myotube Model of Skeletal Muscle Insulin Resistance

open access: yesMetabolites
Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are correlated with severity of insulin resistance, which may partially result from mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction is also common during insulin resistance and is regulated in part by altered ...

The WD40 protein Caf4p is a component of the mitochondrial fission machinery and recruits Dnm1p to mitochondria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The mitochondrial division machinery regulates mitochondrial dynamics and consists of Fis1p, Mdv1p, and Dnm1p. Mitochondrial division relies on the recruitment of the dynamin-related protein Dnm1p to mitochondria.

Plasma extrachromosomal circular DNA as a biomarker in EGFR‐targeted therapy of non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Detection of extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA) in plasma samples from EGFR‐mutated non‐small cell lung cancer patients. Plasma was collected before and during treatment with the EGFR‐tyrosine kinase inhibitor osimertinib. Plasma eccDNA was detected in all cancer samples, and the presence of the EGFR gene on eccDNA serves as a potential biomarker ...
