Mitochondrial large-conductance potassium channel from Dictyostelium discoideum

The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2015
In the present study, we describe the existence of a large-conductance calcium-activated potassium (BKCa) channel in the mitochondria of Dictyostelium discoideum. A single-channel current was recorded in a reconstituted system, using planar lipid bilayers.

New properties of mitochondrial ATP-regulated potassium channels

Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, 2008
The ATP-regulated potassium channel is present in the inner membrane of heart mitochondria. In this study, the activity of a single channel was measured after reconstituting the myocardium inner mitochondrial membrane into a planar lipid bilayer. We provide direct evidence of vectorial pH regulation of mitoK(ATP) channels.

Mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channels in surgical cardioprotection

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2003
ATP-sensitive potassium channels allow for the coupling of membrane potential to cellular metabolic status. Two K(ATP) channel subtypes coexist in the myocardium with one subtype located in the sarcolemma membrane and the other in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. The ATP-sensitive potassium channels can be pharmacologically modulated by a family

Targeting a mitochondrial potassium channel to fight cancer

Cell Calcium, 2015
Although chemotherapy is able to cure many patients with malignancies, it still also often fails. Therefore, novel approaches and targets for chemotherapeutic treatment of malignancies are urgently required. Recent studies demonstrated the expression of several potassium channels in the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Dynamics: An Indicator of Mitochondrial Potassium Channel Opener

2005 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology 27th Annual Conference, 2005
Mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) is an intracellular event that is closely related to apoptosis and necrosis. However, whether this process underlies the recently reported neuroprotective potency of mitochondrial potassium channel openers applied in vivo remains uncertain.

OPENING OF MITOCHONDRIAL POTASSIUM CHANNELS

Transplantation, 2000
This study was designed to assess the protective effects of the mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel (KATP) opener diazoxide as an additive to heart preservation solution.Forty isolated isovolumic buffer-perfused rat hearts were divided into four groups.

Guide to the Pharmacology of Mitochondrial Potassium Channels

2016
This chapter provides a critical overview of the available literature on the pharmacology of mitochondrial potassium channels. In the first part, the reader is introduced to the topic, and eight known protein contributors to the potassium permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane are presented.

Mechanosensitivity of mitochondrial large-conductance calcium-activated potassium channels

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Bioenergetics, 2018
Potassium channels have been discovered in the inner mitochondrial membrane of various cells. These channels can regulate the mitochondrial membrane potential, the matrix volume, respiration and reactive species generation. Therefore, it is believed that their activation is cytoprotective in various tissues. In our study, the single-channel activity of

Physiology of mitochondrial potassium channels

2012
The inner membrane of the ATP-producing organelles of endosymbiotic origin, mitochondria, has long been considered to be poorly permeable to cations and anions, since the strict control of inner mitochondrial membrane permeability is crucial for efficient ATP synthesis.
