Ultrastructural studies on mitochondrial swelling [PDF]

open access: yesBiochemical Journal, 1970
Mitochondrial swelling induced by valinomycin, calcium chloride and Pi was studied after potassium permanganate fixation in suspension. Valinomycin induces a rapid K+ influx, increase of the matrix space and out-folding of the cristae, with good preservation of the matrix material.

Specific Features of Mitochondrial Dysfunction under Conditions of Ferroptosis Induced by t-Butylhydroperoxide and Iron: Protective Role of the Inhibitors of Lipid Peroxidation and Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Pore Opening

open access: yesMembranes, 2023
Recent studies have indicated the critical importance of mitochondria in the induction and progression of ferroptosis. There is evidence indicating that tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBH), a lipid-soluble organic peroxide, is capable of inducing ferroptosis ...

The effect of triethyltin on mitochondrial swelling [PDF]

open access: yesBiochemical Pharmacology, 1961
Triethyltin induces swelling of isolated rat liver mitochondria suspended in sucrose or KC1 media. This effect is not seen with brain mitochondria. Triethyltin swelling is only minimally reduced by EDTA or amytal but is prevented by 2 :Cdinitro- phenol, cyanide or salicylate. The addition of adenosine tri- or diphosphate causes reversal of the swelling;

Activation of glybenclamide-sensitive mitochondrial swelling under induction of cyclosporin of A-sensitive mitochondrial pore [PDF]

open access: yesThe Ukrainian Biochemical Journal, 2014
Induction of mitochondrial swelling and increased generation of reactive oxygen forms by Ca ions have been shown in suspension of mitochondria from rat uterus. These effects were suppressed by the blocker of mitochondrial Ca2+-uniporter ruthenium red and

Identity, structure, and function of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore: controversies, consensus, recent advances, and future directions

open access: yesCell Death and Differentiation, 2023
The mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) describes a Ca^2+-dependent and cyclophilin D (CypD)-facilitated increase of inner mitochondrial membrane permeability that allows diffusion of molecules up to 1.5 kDa in size.

Amyloid-β accumulation in human astrocytes induces mitochondrial disruption and changed energy metabolism

open access: yesJournal of Neuroinflammation, 2023
Background Astrocytes play a central role in maintaining brain energy metabolism, but are also tightly connected to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Effects of high intensity interval training on neuro-cardiovascular dynamic changes and mitochondrial dysfunction induced by high-fat diet in rats.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Background and aimsMitochondrial swelling is involved in the pathogenesis of many human diseases associated with oxidative stress including obesity. One of the strategies for prevention of deleterious effects related to obesity and overweight is engaging

PREVENTION OF PHOSPHATE - INDUCED MITOCHONDRIAL SWELLING [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Cell Biology, 1962
The prevention of phosphate-induced mitochondrial swelling in the whole retina of the rabbit was studied with the electron microscope. It was found that a mixture of ATP, Mg++, and bovine serum albumin protected the mitochondria in vitro. This finding confirmed the results obtained spectrophotometrically with isolated rat liver mitochondria by ...

Effect of high phosphorus diet on the renal mitochondrial swelling of rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Five-week-old rats were fed on a diet containing phosphorus either at 0.3% (control diet) or at 1.5% (high p diet) for 21 days. Mitochondrial fraction was obtained from the kidney by the usual method.
