α‐Synuclein aggregation landscape from phase separation to neurotoxic intermediates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Alpha‐synuclein aggregation in Parkinson's disease involves a complex landscape of transient intermediates, including oligomers, fibrils and liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS). A view is emerging in which LLPS maturation into solid‐like condensates may contribute to the formation of neurotoxic species.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Tools for molecular epidemiology of leishmaniasis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Molecular biology provides a range of tools for epidemiological investigations. So far, there has been limited application of molecular epidemiology in leishmaniasis research.

Forensic utilization of NGS-STRs and evaluation of system efficacy for different kinship identifications

open access: yesHuman Genomics
Background The accurate identification of complex kinship relationships remains a significant challenge in forensic practice. Traditional kinship identification methods, which primarily rely on length polymorphisms of short tandem repeats (STRs), often ...

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Validation and clinical application of molecular methods for the identification of molds in tissue

open access: yes, 2006
Background. Invasive fungal infections due to less-common molds are an increasing problem, and accurate diagnosis is difficult.Methods. We used our previously established molecular method, which allows species identification of molds in histological ...

From genetic data to kinship clarity: employing machine learning for detecting incestuous relations

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
Introduction:The aim of the study was to develop a predictive model based on STR profiles of mothers and children for the detection of incestuous conception. Methods:Based on allele frequency data from the USA and Saudi Arabia, STR profiles were generated

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

ABL kinase‐dependent phosphorylation of SH proteins promotes their direct interaction with CRK family SH2 domains

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
CT10 regulator of kinase (CRK) and CRK‐Like (CRKL) are signaling adaptors driving cell adhesion, motility, differentiation, and proliferation. SH2‐domain containing (SH) proteins are enriched in YXXP motifs which when phosphorylated create preferred binding sites for CRK family SH2 domains.
