Airway Mucus and Asthma: The Role of MUC5AC and MUC5B [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Medicine, 2017
Asthma is characterized by mucus abnormalities. Airway epithelial hyperplasia and metaplasia result in changes in stored and secreted mucin and the production of a pathologic mucus gel. Mucus transport is impaired, culminating in mucus plugging and airway obstruction—a major cause of morbidity in asthma.

Pathophysiological relevance of sputum MUC5AC and MUC5B levels in patients with mild asthma

open access: yesAllergology International, 2022
Background: Airway mucus hypersecretion is an important pathophysiological feature of asthma. MUC5AC and MUC5B are the major secreted polymeric mucins in airways, and their compositions affect mucus properties.

A SNP altering the MUC5AC mucin structure is increased in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis together with the MUC5B SNP [PDF]

open access: yesRespiratory Research
Background The gel-forming mucins MUC5B and MUC5AC constitute the main structural components of mucus in the respiratory system where MUC5AC is known to form nets. The MUC5B (rs35705950) Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) has been shown to increase the

Immunohistochemical detection of MUC5AC and MUC5B mucins in ferrets

open access: yesBMC Research Notes, 2023
Objective Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition that causes abnormal mucus secretions in affected organs. MUC5AC and MUC5B are gel-forming mucins and frequent targets for investigations in CF tissues.

Tandem repeats of the 5′ flanking region of human MUC5AC have a role as a novel enhancer in MUC5AC gene expression

open access: yesBiochemistry and Biophysics Reports, 2019
MUC5AC is a well-known gastric differentiation marker, which has been frequently used for the classification of stomach cancer. However, the molecular mechanism of regulation of MUC5AC expression remains to be elucidated.

MUC5AC Expression in Various Tumor Types and Nonneoplastic Tissue: A Tissue Microarray Study on 10 399 Tissue Samples

open access: yesTechnology in Cancer Research and Treatment, 2021
Background: Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC) belongs to the glycoprotein family of secreted gel-forming mucins and is physiologically expressed in some epithelial cells.

Muc5ac mucin expression during rat skin development

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Histochemistry, 2015
Some mucin genes have been detected during human embryonic and fetal organ development; however, little is known about mucin expression in epidermal development, neither in humans nor in other species. The present research was developed to explore Muc5ac

Changes in Mucin Production in Human Airway Epithelial Cells After Exposure to Electronic Cigarette Vapor With or Without Nicotine [PDF]

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology, 2021
Objectives The emergence of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has created new perceptions of the tobacco market. Unlike traditional tobacco, the greatest advantage of e-cigarettes is that they have less smell and are convenient and inexpensive. Most e-

The effect of 8 weeks of quercetin supplementation and intermittent exercise on gene expression of Muc5Ac, Muc4 and polyphosphate in rats with colon cancer [PDF]

open access: yesSport Sciences and Health Research, 2023
Background: Expression of mucosal levels would affect the function of internal organs of the body and the digestive system, such as by creating a blockage for the progression of cancerous tumors and the failure of the target tissue, especially the large ...

ROMO1 is involved in airway mucus hypersecretion in COPD through the mitochondrial ROS-STAT6 pathway [PDF]

open access: yesRespiratory Research
Background Oxidative stress contributes to airway mucus hypersecretion in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although reactive oxygen species modulator 1 (ROMO1) is involved in mitochondrial oxidative stress, its role in ...
