Muscimol as an Ionotropic GABA Receptor Agonist

Neurochemical Research, 2014
Muscimol, a psychoactive isoxazole from Amanita muscaria and related mushrooms, has proved to be a remarkably selective agonist at ionotropic receptors for the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. This historic overview highlights the discovery and development of muscimol and related compounds as a GABA agonist by Danish and Australian neurochemists ...

Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Muscimol

ACS Chemical Neuroscience
Muscimol (3) is a psychoactive isoxazole present in various Amanita mushrooms, along with ibotenic acid and muscarine. It is structurally related to GABA and acts as a GABAA agonist with great affinity. Muscimol use dates back to Siberian shamanic cultures as an entheogen, where it was ingested orally to exert psychoactive effects.

Potentiation by intraventricular muscimol of the anticonflict effect of benzodiazepines

Brain Research, 1980
The anticonflict action of muscimol (a potent GABA receptor agonist) and its ability to potentiate the anticonflict action of the benzodiazepines was studied in rats using VOgel's procedure. Rats were injected intraventricularly with a dose of muscimol from 50 to 200 ng to study whether the anticonflict action was dose-related.

The action of muscimol on neurones of the substantia nigra of the rat

Experientia, 1978
Muscimol and GABA applied microintophoretically onto nigral neurones reduce the discharge rate of most of these cells. Bicuculline reversibly antagonizes the action of muscimol. I.p. applied muscimol reduces the firing rate of about half of the nigral cells tested.
