Aging Does Not Exacerbate Muscle Loss During Denervation and Lends Unique Muscle-Specific Atrophy Resistance With Akt Activation

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
Sarcopenia, or age-related skeletal muscle atrophy and weakness, imposes significant clinical and economic burdens on affected patients and societies.

Muscle-nerve communication and the molecular assessment of human skeletal muscle denervation with aging

open access: yes, 2021
Muscle fiber denervation is a major contributor to the decline in physical function observed with aging. Denervation can occur through breakdown of the NMJ itself, affecting only that particular fiber, or through the death of a motoneuron, which can lead

Administration of Recombinant Heat Shock Protein 70 Delays Peripheral Muscle Denervation in the SOD1G93A Mouse Model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesNeurology Research International, 2012
A prominent clinical feature of ALS is muscle weakness due to dysfunction, denervation and degeneration of motoneurons (MNs). While MN degeneration is a late stage event in the ALS mouse model, muscle denervation occurs significantly earlier in the ...

Natural Frequencies of Levodopa‐Induced Dyskinesia in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Abnormal involuntary movements, known as dyskinesias, are common complications of levodopa treatment in patients with Parkinson's disease and can significantly impair quality of life. The underlying pathophysiology remains unclear, and current therapeutic options are limited.

Muscle Bmal1 is Dispensable for the Progress of Neurogenic Muscle Atrophy in Mice

open access: yesJournal of Circadian Rhythms, 2016
Global deletion of aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator-like ('Arntl'; also known as 'Bmal1'), a molecular component of the circadian clock, resulted in an extreme loss of muscle mass.

Pre‐Regenerative Endothelial Cells Empowered by Antler Blood Exosomes Orchestrate Peripheral Nerve Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The pre‐regenerative vascular niche (PVN) is essential for nerve repair, yet its endothelial blueprint remains unclear. We identified angiogenic ECs (AECs) as the dominant pre‐regenerative subset and found that antler blood–derived exosomes (AB‐EXO) promote repair via IMP3.

A Microenvironment‐Adaptive Scaffold Rejuvenates Peripheral Nerve Regeneration During Aging Via Dual Modulation of Ferroptotic Stimuli in Schwann Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
(i) Aging impairs peripheral nerve regeneration via its dual ferroptosis‐mediated pathologies in senescent schwann cells. (ii) The composite nerve conduit is a symbiosis niche integrating microenvironment‐responsive nanoparticles (Ga‐PTAs) and maxillofacial‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (Mmscs).

CtBP1 sustains activity-dependent muscle properties and dampens synaptic, contractile and metabolic changes triggered by denervation

open access: yesSkeletal Muscle
Background Denervation triggers dramatic atrophy of skeletal muscle, accompanied by synaptic, contractile and metabolic changes. Several factors were shown to contribute to genetic reprogramming and proteostasis changes after denervation.

The Adipose‐Sympathetic Nerve Crosstalk: FSTL1 as an Adipocyte‐Derived Neurotrophic Factor for WAT Browning

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
As a novel adipose‐derived neurotrophic factor, Follistatin‐like 1 is endocytosed by sympathetic neurons primarily via tropomyosin‐related kinase B. This process promotes sympathetic innervation in adipose tissue and norepinephrine release, leading to white adipose tissue browning, enhanced thermogenesis, and anti‐obesity effects in mice.
