Alcohol‐induced altered glycans in human tracheal epithelial cells promote bacterial adhesion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Alcohol induces altered glycans to promote bacteria adhesion. Heavy alcohol drinking is known to increase the risk of bacterial pneumonia. However, the link between alcohol levels and risk of infection remains underexplored. Recently, we found that alcohol induced α2‐6sialo mucin O‐glycans in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells, which mediated the ...

Assessing the accuracy of the updated Fujifilm SILVAMP TB LAM II assay between lot numbers

open access: yesIJTLD Open
BACKGROUND: The Fujifilm SILVAMP TB LAM (FujiLAM) assay, a point-of-care test detecting urine-based lipoarabinomannans, has demonstrated notable diagnostic accuracy for TB. However, FujiLAM exhibits lot-to-lot variability, limiting its clinical use.

Mycobacterium marinum

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2017
ABSTRACT Mycobacterium marinum is a well-known pathogenic mycobacterium for skin and soft tissue infections and is associated with fishes and water. Among nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), it is the leading cause of extrarespiratory human infections worldwide. In addition, there is a specific scientific interest in

Adult‐Onset Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis Presenting With Subacute Cognitive Deficits

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We describe the case of a 41‐year‐old man diagnosed with adult‐onset subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The patient presented with subacute progressive cognitive deficits and a neuropsychological profile indicating predominant frontoparietal dysfunction. MRI showed only mild parietal‐predominant cerebral atrophy.

Expression of dnaE2 promotes genetic diversity in mycobacterial biofilms

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
The complex cellular architecture and microenvironments within biofilms give rise to a physiologically and genetically heterogeneous population. Transcriptome analysis of Mycobacterium smegmatis from biofilm culture and its transition phase into ...

Spinal Cord Infarction Versus Idiopathic Transverse Myelitis: Clinical, Radiological, and Functional Insights From a Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Spinal cord infarction (SCI) is a rare but devastating myelopathy, characterized by a high disability rate and an unfavorable prognosis. It has often been underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed as idiopathic transverse myelitis (ITM). This study aimed to describe the clinical features, radiological biomarkers, treatments, and functional ...

Next‐Generation Bio‐Reducible Lipids Enable Enhanced Vaccine Efficacy in Malaria and Primate Models

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Structure–activity relationship (SAR) optimization of bio‐reducible ionizable lipids enables the development of highly effective lipid nanoparticle (LNP) mRNA vaccines. Lead LNPs show superior tolerability and antibody responses in rodents and primates, outperforming approved COVID‐19 vaccine lipids.

Relationship between Mycobacterium nonchromogenicum, Mycobacterium terrae, Mycobacterium novum and Subgroup “V” (Mycobacterium trivial) [PDF]

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Microbiology, 1971
ABSTRACTComparison was made among Mycobacterium nonchromogenicum, M. terrae, M. novum and subgroup “V” (M. trivial) These organisms together are differentiated from other mycobacteria of group II and group III by the following characters: (1) Sensitiveness to ethambutol; (2) Tolerance to nitrite; (3) Tolerance to Tween 80; (4) Inability to utilize ...

Cell Calcification Models and Their Implications for Medicine and Biomaterial Research

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Calcification, is the process by which the tissues containing minerals are formed, occurring during normal physiological processes, or in pathological conditions. Here, it is aimed to give a comprehensive overview of the range of cell models available, and the approaches taken by these models, highlighting when and how methodological divergences arise,
