Serum and Saliva Myelin Basic Protein as Multiple Sclerosis Biomarker [PDF]

open access: yesBasic and Clinical Neuroscience, 2021
Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is presented with motor and sensory function loss. It is caused by demyelination and following axonal lesion. As Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is one of the key elements of the myelin cover, we examined the level of MBP

Myelin basic protein enhances axonal regeneration from neural progenitor cells [PDF]

open access: yesCell & Bioscience, 2021
Introduction Stem cell therapy using neural progenitor cells (NPCs) shows promise in mitigating the debilitating effects of spinal cord injury (SCI). Notably, myelin stimulates axonal regeneration from mammalian NPCs.

Amyloid fibrils of the myelin basic protein are an integral component of myelin in the vertebrate brain [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
The myelin basic protein (MBP) is the most abundant intracellular protein of the myelin, which forms the electrically insulating sheath of axons of many actively functioning neurons. This protein binds the opposite membranes of the flattened processes of

Phase-Dependent Adsorption of Myelin Basic Protein to Phosphatidylcholine Lipid Bilayers [PDF]

open access: yesMembranes
The dense packing of opposite cytoplasmic surfaces of the lipid-enriched myelin membrane, responsible for the proper saltatory conduction of nerve impulses through axons, is ensured by the adhesive properties of myelin basic protein (MBP).

Membrane Association Landscape of Myelin Basic Protein Portrays Formation of the Myelin Major Dense Line [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Compact myelin comprises most of the dry weight of myelin, and its insulative nature is the basis for saltatory conduction of nerve impulses. The major dense line (MDL) is a 3-nm compartment between two cytoplasmic leaflets of stacked myelin membranes ...

Myelin basic protein and occludin may be the biomarkers to diagnose leukoaraiosis and cognitive dysfunction [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Leukoaraiosis (LA) can lead to a range of clinical symptoms, with cognitive dysfunction being the most prominent. However, the biomarkers that could assist in the early diagnosis of LA and predict disease progression are lacking.

Citrullinated isomer of myelin basic protein can induce inflammatory responses in astrocytes [PDF]

open access: yesIBRO Neuroscience Reports
Purpose: During the course of demyelinating inflammatory diseases, myelin-derived proteins, including myelin basic protein(MBP), are secreted into extracellular space.

D-Aspartic acid in purified myelin and myelin basic protein

open access: yesBiochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1986
The presence of the biologically uncommon D-isomer of aspartic acid in the white matter of human brains has been reported previously from this laboratory (1). We now report that the level of D-aspartate in human brains is higher in purified myelin than in white matter and is even higher in the myelin basic protein fraction.
