Fatty Acid Composition of Myelin Proteolipid Protein During Vertebrate Evolution

Neurochemical Research, 1999
The hydrophobic myelin proteolipid protein (PLP) contains covalently bound long-chain fatty acids which are attached to intracellular cysteine residues via thioester linkages. To gain insight into the role of acylation in the structure and function of myelin PLP, the amount and pattern of acyl groups attached to the protein during vertebrate evolution ...

Molecular Biology and Neurogenetics of Myelin Proteolipid Protein

1994
Proteolipid protein (PLP) is a major component of myelin in the central nervous system where it constitutes approximately 50% of the total myelin protein by mass. This alone suggests an important structural function of PLP in compact myelin. More recently, the application of molecular genetic techniques by several groups has revealed an unexpected ...

Cloned Proteolipid Protein and Myelin Basic Protein cDNA. Transcription of the Two Genes During Myelination

Biological Chemistry Hoppe-Seyler, 1986
cDNA clones of rat brain proteolipid protein (PLP), also named lipophilin, the major integral myelin membrane protein, and of myelin basic protein (MBP), the major extrinsic myelin protein, have been isolated from a rat brain cDNA library cloned into the PstI site of pBR322.

Developmental Expression of the Myelin Proteolipid Protein Gene

1990
Myelinogenesis is a highly regulated developmental process, which is necessary for normal CNS development. Oligodendrocyte differentiation and its subsequent elaboration of a myelin membrane that ensheaths certain axons occur within a very precise time frame — for rodents, from 15 to 25 days of age.

T cell recognition of myelin proteolipid protein and myelin proteolipid protein peptides in the peripheral blood of multiple sclerosis and control subjects

Journal of Neuroimmunology, 1998
Myelin proteolipid protein (PLP) is a prime candidate autoantigen for multiple sclerosis. In order to define potential immunodominant epitopes, T cell lines (TCL) from the peripheral blood of HLA-DR 15(2) MS patients were established which responded to the intact molecule of PLP.
