Abstract The myofibrils were shown to be lipoprotein structures. Lipoprotein nature of these structures was confirmed by their lipid phosphorus to protein ratio in a completely dispersed myofibril preparation of the skeletal muscle cells. The ratio was found to be 49.65 ± 3.95 microgram P / mg protein.

To the heart of myofibril assembly
Trends in Cell Biology, 2000One of the most fascinating examples of cytoskeletal assembly is the myofibril, the contractile structure of striated (i.e. skeletal and cardiac) muscle. Myofibrils are composed of repeating contractile units known as sarcomeres, perhaps the most highly ordered macromolecular structures in eukaryotic cells.

Iodination of myofibrils and myosin
Journal of Muscle Research and Cell Motility, 1984The relative reactivity of the tyrosine side chains in the proteins of skeletal muscle myofibrils was determined using iodination techniques. The destruction of ATPase activity of myofibrils and myosin by lactoperoxidase and chloramine-T iodination could be prevented by the attachment of cysteamine to the sulphydryl groups prior to the iodination ...

Building a myofibril from its component proteins requires the interactions of many different proteins in a process whose details are not understood. Several models have been proposed to provide a framework for understanding the increasing data on new myofibrillar proteins and their localizations during muscle development.

Binding of filamin isoforms to myofibrils
Journal of Muscle Research & Cell Motility, 2000Two filamin isoforms were purified from bovine tissues and characterized. Muscle filamin and nonmuscle filamin had different SDS gel mobilities, proteolytic digestion patterns, myofibrillar binding distributions and myofibril binding affinities. The muscle specific filamin had an apparent molecular weight of 265 kDa and bound primarily to the Z-lines ...

Skeletal muscle cells, more commonly called muscle fibres, are multinucleated syncytia formed during development by fusion of mononucleated precursor cells, the myoblasts. They measure 10–100 μm in diameter and can have lengths from a few millimeters up to almost a meter.

Force depression in single myofibrils
Journal of Applied Physiology, 2010Force depression after active shortening has been observed in different muscle preparations. It has been assumed that force depression is caused by the development of sarcomere length nonuniformities after shortening. However, this hypothesis has never been investigated in a preparation where individual sarcomere lengths could be directly measured ...
