Overproduction of N-Acetylneuraminic Acid (Sialic Acid) by Sialuria Fibroblasts [PDF]
Fibroblasts from the original sialuria patient are shown to contain high levels of free sialic acid, i.e., an average of 87 versus a normal average of 2 nmol/mg of protein. Gas liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis confirmed that the accumulated material is N-acetylneuraminic acid.

Synthesis of Sulfo-Sialic Acid Analogues: Potent Neuraminidase Inhibitors in Regards to Anomeric Functionality [PDF]
The design, synthesis and application of N-acetylneuraminic acid-derived compounds bearing anomeric sulfo functional groups are described. These novel compounds, which we refer to as sulfo-sialic acid analogues, include 2-decarboxy-2-deoxy-2-sulfo-N ...

Molecular Structural Analysis of Porcine CMAH-Native Ligand Complex and High Throughput Virtual Screening to Identify Novel Inhibitors [PDF]
Porcine meat is the most consumed red meat worldwide. Pigs are also vital tools in biological and medical research. However, xenoreactivity between porcine's N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) and human anti-Neu5Gc antibodies poses a significant ...

Sialic Acid (N-Acetylneuraminic Acid) in Human Serum
Abstract A simple spectrophotometric method is described for the sialic acids which utilizes the reaction with resorcinol and extraction with butyl acetate-n-butanol as a solvent. Normal values for adults, utilizing N-acetylneuraminic acid as a standard, were found to be 60 ± 10.4 mg./100 ml. Values for newborn babies averaged 40.4 ± 5.7.

Sialic Acid Mutarotation Is Catalyzed by the Escherichia coli β-Propeller Protein YjhT [PDF]
The acquisition of host-derived sialic acid is an important virulence factor for some bacterial pathogens, but in vivo this sugar acid is sequestered in sialoconjugates as the {alpha}-anomer.

Role of sialic acid in brachyspira hyodysenteriae adhesion to pig colonic mucins [PDF]
Infection with Brachyspira hyodysenteriae results in mucoid hemorrhagic diarrhea. This pathogen is associated with the colonic mucus layer, mainly composed of mucins. Infection regulates mucin O-glycosylation in the colon and increases mucin secretion as

Single-channel measurements of an N-acetylneuraminic acid-inducible outer membrane channel in Escherichia coli [PDF]
NanC is an Escherichia coli outer membrane protein involved in sialic acid (Neu5Ac, i.e., N-acetylneuraminic acid) uptake. Expression of the NanC gene is induced and controlled by Neu5Ac. The transport mechanism of Neu5Ac is not known.

Investigation into the Chemical Modification of Active Site Residues of an Aldolase Enzyme [PDF]
It has previously been demonstrated that the biological incorporation and chemical modification of cysteine residues within the active site of the aldolase N-acetylneuraminic acid lyase (NAL) can lead to active chemically modified NAL variants.

Systematic Chemoenzymatic Synthesis of O-Sulfated Sialyl Lewis x Antigens. [PDF]
O-Sulfated sialyl Lewis x antigens play important roles in nature. However, due to their structural complexity, they are not readily accessible by either chemical or enzymatic synthetic processes.
