N-glycosylation in Haloferax volcanii: Adjusting the sweetness

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2013
Long believed to be restricted to Eukarya, it is now known that cells of all three domains of life perform N-glycosylation, the covalent attachment of glycans to select target protein asparagine residues.

Differential effects of N-linked glycosylation of Vstm5 at multiple sites on surface expression and filopodia formation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
V-set and transmembrane domain-containing protein 5 (Vstm5), a newly characterized small membrane glycoprotein, can induce membrane protrusions in various cells.

Influence of N-glycosylation on Expression and Function of Pseudorabies Virus Glycoprotein gB

open access: yesPathogens, 2021
Envelope glycoprotein (g)B is conserved throughout the Herpesviridae and mediates fusion of the viral envelope with cellular membranes for infectious entry and spread.

Glyco-biomarkers: Potential determinants of cellular physiology and pathology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Once dismissed as just the icing on the cake, sugar molecules are emerging as vital components in life’s intricate machinery. Our understanding of their function within the context of the proteins and lipids to which they are attached has matured rapidly,

N-Linked Glycosylation Attenuates H3N2 Influenza Viruses [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 2007
ABSTRACT Over the last four decades, H3N2 subtype influenza A viruses have gradually acquired additional potential sites for glycosylation within the globular head of the hemagglutinin (HA) protein. Here, we have examined the biological effect of additional glycosylation on the virulence of H3N2 influenza viruses. We created otherwise

Glycosylation pattern of brush border-associated glycoproteins in enterocyte-like cells: involvement of complex-type N-glycans in apical trafficking [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We have previously reported that galectin-4, a tandem repeat-type galectin, regulates the raft-dependent delivery of glycoproteins to the apical brush border membrane of enterocyte-like HT-29 cells.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Cytoplasmic glycoengineering of Apx toxin fragments in the development of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae glycoconjugate vaccines

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2019
Background Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is the causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia and represents a major burden to the livestock industry. Virulence can largely be attributed to the secretion of a series of haemolytic toxins, which are highly ...

N‐linked glycosylation of the liver cancer biomarker GP73 [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cellular Biochemistry, 2007
AbstractThe association between elevated circulating levels of GP73 (and fucosylated GP73 in particular) and hepatocellular carcinoma suggests that a thorough analysis of the extent of GP73 glycosylation is warranted. Detailed analysis of the glycosylation patterns of such low abundance proteins are hampered by technical difficulties.

Discerning protein pools by selective staining with self‐labeling tags

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cell surface proteins have an intra‐ and extracellular pool. Combining genetic fusion to self‐labeling tags that can be addressed with small molecule fluorophores allows separating these pools. We highlight recent developments and techniques for state‐of‐the‐art interrogation of cell surface proteins in the complex tissue setting.
