Extraction of natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis using liquid biphasic flotation system

Bioresource Technology, 2019
This work aimed to study the application of liquid biphasic flotation (LBF) for the efficient and rapid recovery of astaxanthin from H. pluvialis microalgae. The performance of LBF for the extraction of astaxanthin was studied comprehensively under different operating conditions, including types and concentrations of food-grade alcohol and salt, volume

Natural occurrence of enantiomeric and Meso astaxanthin 7∗-crustaceans including zooplankton

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 1987
Abstract 1. 1. The isomeric ratio of enantiomeric and meso astaxanthin (free and esterified) in the crustaceans Calanus finmarchicus, Euphausia superba, Thysanoessa inermis, Acanthephyra purpurea and Cancer pagurus is reported. 2. 2. The ratios observed in C. finmarchicus and T. inermis , both considered as important feed ingredients

ABSORPTION AND UTILISATION OF NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC ASTAXANTHIN FORMS IN SALMONID NUTRITION

2001
Consumer preference for commercially reared fish products that resemble their wild counterparts has resulted in the supplementation of pigments called carotenoids into aquafeeds to promote a pink-red colour in the flesh of salmonid fish. To date synthetic forms of these pigments have been commonly utilised to achieve this desired colouration, with the ...

Effect of natural astaxanthin on sperm quality and mitochondrial function of breeder rooster semen cryopreservation

Cryobiology
Cryopreservation causes higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentrations, leading to oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation damaging sperm, and using antioxidants can improve semen quality after freeze-thaw. Natural astaxanthin (ASTA) can be inserted into cell membranes and its antioxidant properties are stronger than other antioxidants.

Chemoprevention of rat oral carcinogenesis by naturally occurring xanthophylls, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin.

Cancer research, 1995
The chemopreventive effects of two xanthophylls, astaxanthin (AX) and canthaxanthin (CX) on oral carcinogenesis induced by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) was investigated in male F344 rats. Rats were given 20 ppm of 4-NQO in their drinking water for 8 weeks to induce oral neoplasms or preneoplasms.
