Water and energy-based optimisation of a “MiniCity”: A system dynamics approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Urban sprawls in Australia and several countries around the world have introduced a number of social, economic, and environmental issues for residents and urban planners, highlighting the need for new urban development concepts.

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SHORT FOOD SUPPLY CHAINS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of the Polish Association of Agricultural and Agribusiness Economists
It is commonly believed that short food supply chains contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas. However, such a view cannot be substantiated without supporting evidence.

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

A rural agricultural-sustainable energy community model and its application to Felton Valley, Australia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Energy and food security require a delicate balance which should not threaten or undermine community prosperity. Where it is proposed to derive energy from conventional fossil fuel resources (such as coal, shale oil, natural gas, coal seam gas) located ...

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Planning for a Resilient Urban Food System: A Case Study from Baltimore City, Maryland

open access: yesJournal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development, 2018
Many natural and non-natural hazards threaten food security, especially in urban areas where growing populations place extra demands on the food supply.

The challenges facing contemporary food systems: European policy and governance pathways to sustainable food consumption and production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The security and resilience of the food supply and its sustainability has risen up the public policy agenda in recent years. Policy makers must address a series of longer-term structural and fundamental challenges to a sustainable food supply that are ...

Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.
