Long‐term interventions by conservation and development projects support successful recovery of tropical peatlands in Amazonia

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 871-886, April 2025.
Abstract Rural communities in Amazonia rely on harvesting Mauritia flexuosa fruit, a dominant peatland palm, for their subsistence and income. However, these palms are felled to harvest the fruits, which has led to reduced resource availability due to the pressure exerted by the increasing fruit demand.

Territorial aggression and coexistence in hybridizing Campylorhynchus: disentangling the roles of climate, resource availability, and species interactions in western Ecuador

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 2, March 2025.
Interspecific territoriality is a prevalent form of interference competition among animals across environments. However, the connections between interspecific territorial aggression and other related aspects such as hybridization and climate remain unexplored.

Behind the lenses: Biases in the contribution of wildlife photography to biodiversity representation

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 2, Page 541-556, February 2025.
Abstract Nature‐related visual media has a significant impact on today's society by engaging the public in conservation problems and promoting pro‐environmental behaviours. Although major attention has been paid to how some types of visual media (e.g. documentaries) offer unrealistic portrayals of the natural world, biases on representation by wildlife

Toward Sustainable Biocultural Ecotourism: An Integrated Spatial Analysis of Cultural and Biodiversity Richness in Colombia

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 1, Page 194-214, January 2025.
Abstract Ecotourism plays a vital role in both economic development and depending on the scale, it can also aid environmental conservation. Ecotourism planning often considers culture‐based and nature‐based tourism separately, failing to recognize the synergies between them, with the potential to market locations as biocultural destinations.

Sources and Sinks of N in Ecosystem Solutions Along the Water Path Through a Tropical Montane Forest in Ecuador Assessed With δ15N Values of Total Dissolved Nitrogen

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 129, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract The globally increasing reactive N richness affects even remote ecosystems such as the tropical montane forests in Ecuador. We tested whether the δ15N values of total dissolved N (TDN), measured directly in solution with a TOC‐IRMS, can be used to help elucidate N sources and sinks along the water path and thus might be suitable for ecosystem ...
