Cold Plasma Generates a Localized Inflammatory Response and Promotes Muscle Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Therapeutics, EarlyView.
The immediate tissue response to plasma is a pro‐inflammatory response which is characterized by collagen clumping, innate immune cell infiltration, enhanced metabolic processes, and decreased apoptosis. The long‐term tissue response (4‐ and 14‐days) to plasma treatment is characterized by a decreased inflammatory response, decreased adipogenesis, and ...

Dysregulation of NAD+ metabolism induces a Schwann cell dedifferentiation program [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The Schwann cell (SC) is the major component of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that provides metabolic and functional support for peripheral axons. The emerging roles of SC mitochondrial function for PNS development and axonal stability indicate the

In vivo interactions between tungsten microneedles and peripheral nerves [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Engineering & Physics, Volume 34, Issue 6, July 2012, Pages 747-755, 2013
Tungsten microneedles are currently used to insert neural electrodes into living peripheral nerves. However, the biomechanics underlying these procedures is not yet well characterized. For this reason, the aim of this work was to model the interactions between these microneedles and living peripheral nerves.

Emerging Therapeutic Strategies for Hearing Loss

open access: yesAdvanced Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Challenges still exist in treating hearing loss in cases of severe damage to hair cells or spiral ganglion neurons. Here, a schematic diagram of cochlear sensory hair cells and auditory nerves is presented. It is found that in normal Corti organs, hair cells have upright stereocilia at the top and auditory neurons at the base. Ototoxic drugs, noise, or

Immune Checkpoint PD‐L1 Modulates Retinal Microglial Activation to Alleviate Vascular Leakage in Choroidal Neovascularization via ERK

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
PD‐L1 limits neuroinflammation in neovascular AMD by modulating microglial activation. Its deficiency exacerbates vascular leakage and choroidal neovascularization (CNV) via ERK signaling, while enhancing PD‐L1 reduces inflammation and neovascularization. Targeting PD‐L1 may offer a novel immunomodulatory strategy for NVAMD.
