Detection of cytomegalovirus using ‘boosted’ nested PCR
As a part of a study of an outbreak of CMV infections in a neonatal care intensive care unit, a modified nested PCR was developed for detection of CMV DNA in clinical specimens. Standard nested PCR involves a critical step; passage of PCR products from the first reaction round to the second round.

ZDHHC17 palmitoylates CDK4, which together with TRAF6‐mediated ubiquitination, drives cell cycle progression and immune surveillance, revealing a rational combination of CDK4 inhibitors with immune checkpoint blockers for ZDHHC17‐driven cancers. ABSTRACT Uncontrolled cell cycle progression is a hallmark of cancer, tightly regulated by both intrinsic ...

Performance of nested-RT-PCR assays for Zika and Dengue detection
Arboviruses represent a public health problem in developing countries. Accurate diagnosis has been challenging in Dengue virus endemic countries, especially since the introduction of the Zika and Chikungunya viruses.

Detection of HIV-1 infection in dried blood spots from a 12-year-old ABO bedside test card [PDF]
Background and Objectives: We tested dried blood from an ABO bedside test card which had been stored at room temperature for 12 years, to prove that a patient with HIV-1 infection had been infected by blood transfusion. Materials and Methods: Immunoblots

Nested RT-PCR in a Single Closed Tube
There are several methods now in widespread use for detecting and characterizing specific RNA targets. These methods include in situ hybridization, Northern blotting, dot or slot blot, RNase protection assay, and reverse transcription coupled to polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Xenogeneic Mitochondrial Transplantation Improves Selected Age‐Associated Phenotypes in Mice
Yak‐derived xenogeneic mitochondrial transplantation improves selected age‐associated phenotypes in mice, enhances mitochondrial functional readouts, and engages host mitochondrial quality‐control pathways. Broad tissue biodistribution, increased ATP production and mtDNA copy number, reduced ROS levels and dysfunctional mitochondria, improved motility ...

Presence of multiple bacterial markers in clinical samples might be useful for presumptive diagnosis of infection in cirrhotic patients with culture-negative reports [PDF]
Bacterial infections in cirrhotic patients with ascites are associated with a severe prognosis and an increased risk of death. The microbiological standard tests for the diagnosis of suspected infection, based on culture test of blood and ascitic fluid ...

Hallgrimson et al. introduce a machine learning algorithm, siMILe, that takes features of single‐molecule localization microscopy localization clusters (e.g., size and sphericity) and finds the clusters that are associated with certain cell conditions (such as differential protein expression or drug treatment).
