Sociodemographic differences in patterns of nicotine and cannabis vaping among US adults

open access: yesPreventive Medicine Reports, 2022
Nicotine and cannabis vaping has increased over the past several years. While patterns of cigarette and cannabis co-use are well-documented, less is known about the intersection between nicotine and cannabis vaping, especially among adults.

Controversies in spine research: Organ culture versus in vivo models for studies of the intervertebral disc

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 5, Issue 4, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Intervertebral disc degeneration is a common cause of low back pain, the leading cause of disability worldwide. Appropriate preclinical models for intervertebral disc research are essential to achieving a better understanding of underlying pathophysiology and for the development, evaluation, and translation of more effective treatments.

CYP2A6 Polymorphisms May Strengthen Individualized Treatment for Nicotine Dependence

open access: yesScientifica, 2015
Each CYP2A6 gene variant metabolizes nicotine differently depending on its enzymatic activities. The normal nicotine metabolizer CYP2A6*1A is associated with high scores of nicotine dependence (5–10) on the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND ...

Influence of nicotine and alcohol on sleep latency: the reward-attention circuit model [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
We previously developed a neurocomputational model called the reward-attention circuit, which has been used to investigate the separate effects of nicotine and alcohol on attention focus. The model is based on known circuits linking midbrain dopaminergic neurons to the thalamocortical loop and is sufficiently versatile to capture diverse phenomena.

An Update: Enzymatic Synthesis for Industrial Applications

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, Accepted Article.
Supported by rapid technological advancements, biocatalytic applications have matured into a sustainable, scalable, and cost‐competitive alternatives to established chemical catalysis. This review presents the most recent examples of enzyme‐based solutions for the manufacturing of molecules with extended carbon‐carbon frameworks and multiple ...

Effect of E-cigarette Use and Social Network on Smoking Behavior Change: An agent-based model of E-cigarette and Cigarette Interaction [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Despite a general reduction in smoking in many areas of the developed world, it remains one of the biggest public health threats. As an alternative to tobacco, the use of electronic cigarettes (ECig) has been increased dramatically over the last decade. ECig use is hypothesized to impact smoking behavior through several pathways, not only as a means of

Development of Extramusculoskeletal Manifestations in Upadacitinib‐Treated Patients With Psoriatic Arthritis or Axial Spondyloarthritis

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective To assess the development of extramusculoskeletal manifestations (EMMs) among patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) or axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) treated with upadacitinib 15 mg. Methods Data (cutoff: August 15, 2022) from five clinical trials in PsA (2), radiographic axSpA (r‐axSpA; previously ankylosing spondylitis) (2), and ...

A physical model of nicotinic ACh receptor kinetics [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2008
We present a new approach to nicotinic receptor kinetics and a new model explaining random variabilities in the duration of open events. The model gives new interpretation on brief and long receptor openings and predicts (for two identical binding sites) the presence of three components in the open time distribution: two brief and a long.

Deciphering the skeletal interoceptive circuitry to control bone homeostasis

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
This review introduces the skeletal interoceptive circuitry, covering the ascending signals from bone tissues to the brain (sensors), the central neural circuits that integrate this information and dispatch commands (CPU), and the descending pathways that regulate bone homeostasis (effectors).

Effects of spatially heterogeneous lakeside development on nearshore biotic communities in a large, deep, oligotrophic lake

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 67, Issue 12, Page 2649-2664, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Sewage released from lakeside development can reshape ecological communities. Nearshore periphyton can rapidly assimilate sewage‐associated nutrients, leading to increases of filamentous algal abundance, thus altering both food abundance and quality for grazers.
