Correlation between type II nitric oxide synthase and p53 expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma

British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2000
Prolonged nitric oxide (NO) production by the enzyme type II nitric oxide synthase (NOS2) has been implicated in angiogenesis and metastasis of human cancers. In animal models, wild-type p53 (but not mutant) protein results in down-regulation of NOS2 expression, which reduces both tumour growth and dissemination.

Antipsychotic, antidepressant, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant drugs induce type II nitric oxide synthase mRNA in rat brain

Neuroscience Letters, 2002
Nitric oxide synthase inhibitors have been regarded as potentially beneficial for psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia, though little is known about how nitric oxide synthases are affected by psychotropic drugs in the brain. Using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis, we investigated the effects of short- and ...

Nitric oxide synthase type‐II is synthesized by human gingival tissue and cultured human gingival fibroblasts

Journal of Periodontal Research, 2000
Nitric oxide is known to be an important inflammatory mediator, and is implicated in the pathophysiology of a range of inflammatory disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the localization and distribution of endothelial NOS (NOSII) in human gingival tissue, and to ascertain if human gingival fibroblasts express NOS‐II when stimulated with ...

Direct Effect of Temperature on the Catalytic Activity of Nitric Oxide Synthases Types I, II, and III

Nitric Oxide, 1999
The effect of temperature (between 5.0 and 45.0 degrees C) on the catalytic activity of nitric oxide synthases types I, II, and III (NOS-I, NOS-II, and NOS-III, respectively) has been investigated, at pH 7.5. The value of V(max) for NOS-I activity increases from 1.8 x 10(1) pmol min(-1) mg(-1), at 5.0 degrees C, to 1.8 x 10(2) pmol min(-1) mg(-1), at ...

Production of nitric oxide by rat type II pneumocytes: increased expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase following inhalation of a pulmonary irritant.

American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, 1994
Nitric oxide is a highly reactive molecule that has been implicated in host defense and tissue injury. In the present studies, we determined whether rat type II alveolar epithelial cells have the capacity to produce this mediator. We found that type II cells synthesize significant quantities of nitric oxide after treatment with the inflammatory ...

Cytokine‐induced expression of type II nitric oxide synthase in astrocytes is downregulated by ATP and glutamate

Glia, 1995
AbstractCombinations of cytokines and/or phorbol ester induce expression of Type II nitric oxide synthase (NOS) mRNA in astrocyte cultures via protein kinase mediated pathways (Simmons and Murphy: GLIA 11:227, 1994; Feinstein et al.: J Neurochem 62:811,1994).

Type II nitric oxide synthase (NOS2) expression correlates with lymph node status in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, 2001
Abstract: In tumour biology, nitric oxide (NO) has a complex array of concentration‐dependent actions, including both inhibitory and promoting effects. It is thought that the levels of NO found in many human cancers lead to enhanced angiogenesis and tumour dissemination. In the current study, we assessed the immunohistochemical expression of the enzyme

Macrophage triggering with cecropin A and melittin-derived peptides induces type II nitric oxide synthase expression.

The Journal of Immunology, 1997
Abstract Triggering of RAW 264.7 cells with a cecropin A-melittin hybrid peptide (CA(1-8)M(1-18)) promoted a rapid rise in the intracellular calcium concentration that was followed, after a lag period of 6 h, by nitric oxide synthesis through the expression of the cytokine-inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (type II NOS or iNOS ...

Effects of a Nitric Oxide Synthase Type II Inhibitor on Compound Action Potential Thresholds in Experimental Endolymphatic Hydrops

Otology & Neurotology, 2007
Nitric oxide (NO) is likely to be synthesized by nitric oxide synthase Type II (NOS II) action and may partake in the origin of changes of compound action potential (CAP) threshold observed in guinea pigs with induced endolymphatic hydrops. This study aimed to assess the action of a NOS II inhibitor on CAP thresholds in these experimental samples. In ...

Partial loss of NADPH-diaphorase/nitric oxide synthase-complex in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and human type-II myofiber atrophy

Neuroscience Letters, 1997
To substantiate the role of nitric oxide synthase type-I (NOS-I) in neurogenic muscular disorders we investigated human biopsy samples of type-II fiber atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) by NOS-I immunoreactivity (-IR), NOS-associated NADPH-dependent diaphorase activity (NOSaD) and Western blot analysis.
