Natural killer (NK) cells mediate the cytolysis of transformed cells and are currently used as an adoptive cellular therapy to treat cancer. Infection with human cytomegalovirus has been shown to expand a subset of "adaptive" NK cells expressing the activation receptor NKG2C that have preferred functional attributes distinct from conventional NK cells.

AbstractThe interest in NK cells and their cytotoxic activity against tumour, infected or transformed cells continuously increases as they become a new efficient and off-the-shelf agents in immunotherapies. Their actions are balanced by a wide set of activating and inhibitory receptors, recognizing their complementary ligands on target cells.

Abstract Formation of the adaptive-like NK cell subset in response to HCMV infection is associated with epigenetic rearrangements, accompanied by multiple changes in the protein expression. This includes a decrease in the expression level of the adapter chain FcεRIγ, NKp30, and NKG2A receptors and an increase in the expression of NKG2C ...

Allogeneic NKG2C-positive NK cells for immunotherapy of glioblastoma multiforme
2021Objective: NKG2C-positive natural killer (NK) cells represents a small NK cell subset, which is found in higher frequency in human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) seropositive patients. NKG2C+ NK cells can recognize target cells displaying HLA-E loaded with intracellularly processed ER signal peptides (sp)[for full text, please go to the a.m. URL]
