Biochemical behaviour of norbixin duringin vitroDNA damage induced by reactive oxygen species [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Nutrition, 2001
Naturally occurring antioxidants such as carotenoids are extensively studied for their potential in reducing the risk for cancer and other chronic diseases. In the present study, the radical-scavenger activity of the food additive norbixin, a water-soluble carotenoid extracted fromBixa orellanaseeds and commercialized as annatto, was evaluated under ...

Antioxidant properties of annatto carotenoids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The antioxidant effects of beta-carotene, oil-soluble (bixin) and water-soluble (norbixin) annatto preparations and mixtures of these carotenoids with virgin olive oil polar extract were assessed in bulk olive oil and oil-in-water emulsions stored at ...

Bixin and norbixin protect against DNA-damage and alterations of redox status induced by methylmercury exposure in vivo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Populations in the Amazon are exposed to organic mercury via consumption of contaminated foods. These ethnic groups consume a specific plant seed annatto which contains certain carotenoids. The aim of this study was to find out if these compounds (bixin,

Active food packaging of cellulose acetate : storage stability, protective effect on oxidation of riboflavin and release in food simulants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
In this work, cellulose acetate films were prepared with the incorporation of different carotenoids (lycopene, norbixin, and zeaxanthin). The effect of adding these natural antioxidants was evaluated through stability during storage under controlled ...

Ethanol Based Extraction of Annatto (Bixa Orellana L.) and Characterisation of the Bixin and Norbixin

open access: yes, 2023
Bixa orellana dye was extracted from the seed by method of Soxhlet extraction using ethanol and a percentage yield of 4.3 was obtained. Recrystallisation of the dye was performed using chloroform and ethanol. TLC was used to separate the dye into Bixin and Norbixin with Rf values of 0.56 and 0.42 respectively.
