Degenerative cervical spine disease – pathogenesis and symptoms
Cervical discopathy is a degenerative process in the intervertebral disc and the structure of the fibrous ring. Due to the processes of proteoglycan breakdown and collagen structure, the nucleus pulposus is dehydrated and susceptible to the damaging ...

Automated Computational Pathology to Assess Degenerative Disc Histology
We utilized human‐in‐the‐loop active learning methods (1) to develop the first computational pathology model to segment disc tissue (2). These segmentation outputs were used to derive shape and other measures to phenotype disc pathology which were correlated with histological scoring but also provides increased sensitivity to detect differences (3 ...

The feasibility of using growth promoting strategies (vertebral periosteal resection and distraction) was investigated via computational and in vivo analysis. Computational analysis demonstrated that there is an increasing mechanical benefit to utilizing concave distraction over convex compression during spinal deformity correction.

Gene‐Hydrogel Microenvironment Regulates Extracellular Matrix Metabolism Balance in Nucleus Pulposus
Gene therapy provides an ideal potential treatment for intervertebral disk degeneration by delivering synthetic microRNAs (miRNAs) to regulate the gene expression levels.

Mouse models are commonly used to study IVD degeneration and related neurological conditions that especially impact elder population. However, how well mice replicate human pathology remains unclear. This study compared lumbar IVD degeneration patterns across age and spinal levels in humans and mice.

Disc degeneration (DD) results in a mechanically dysfunctional disc through progressive loss of the intervertebral disc's (IVD) highly organized structure. This study measured shear and structure properties of the outer annulus fibrosus in surgical DD and minimally degenerative (non‐DD) donor individuals.
