The research of transgenic human nucleus pulposus cell transplantation in the treatment of lumbar disc degeneration

open access: yesKaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, 2019
The present study determines whether the in vivo injection of TGFβ1 and CTGF mediated by AAV2 to transfect nucleus pulposus cells in degenerative lumbar discs can reverse the biological effects of rhesus lumbar disc degeneration.

Platelet‐Rich Fibrin Induces New Bone Formation to Promote Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion of Spine in Rabbits

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
Preparation process of PRF and its promotion of intervertebral fusion. The rabbit lateral fusion model proves that PRF can promote the intervertebral fusion rate of allograft bone. In vitro experiments can be observed that PRF promotes the osteogenic expression of BMSCS.

IL-1β increases asporin expression via the NF-κB p65 pathway in nucleus pulposus cells during intervertebral disc degeneration

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Disc degeneration (DD) is a multifaceted chronic process that alters the structure and function of intervertebral discs. The pathophysiology of degeneration is not completely understood, but the consensus is that changes in genes encoding extracellular ...

Intradiscal Cutibacterium acnes Sustains Modic Type 1‐Like Lesions Over Time in a Rat Lumbar Endplate Injury Model

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
Intradiscal C. acnes injection sustained MC1‐like lesions with persistent neutrophil sustenance in an etiology‐specific lumbar MC rat model. This suggests that patients with bacterial MC etiology may persist in painful MC1, highlighting C. acnes and neutrophils as potential targets to promote MC1‐to‐MC2 conversion and improve pain and disability ...

Histological analysis of nucleus pulposus tissue from patients with lumbar disc herniation after condoliase administration

open access: yesJOR Spine
Background Condoliase is an enzyme used as a treatment for lumbar disc herniation (LDH). This enzyme degrades chondroitin sulfate (CS) in the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc (IVD).

Detrimental Effect of Low‐Magnitude High‐Frequency Vibration in an Ex Vivo Model of Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Despite Estrogen Treatment

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
Low‐magnitude high‐frequency vibration (LMHFV), with or without 17β‐oestradiol (E2), exacerbated papain‐induced bovine intervertebral disc degeneration, reducing cell viability, impairing matrix production, and increasing inflammation. E2 showed no protective effect against papain‐induced degeneration or LMHFV.

Lifetime Physical Loading and Magnetic Resonance‐Derived Intervertebral Disc Health in Adults With Chronic Low Back Pain: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
Final multiple linear regression model: heat maps showing Bone‐specific Physical Activity Questionnaire score associations with T2 values in five intervertebral disc (IVD) regions with statistically significant covariates controlled for at individual spinal levels.

Polyethylene microplastics promote nucleus pulposus cell senescence by inducing oxidative stress via TLR4/NOX2 axis

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
This study aimed to detect and characterize microplastics in intervertebral disc and investigate their effects and molecular mechanism on intervertebral disc degeneration.
