High‐Resolution 3‐Dimensional Micro‐CT Imaging of Intervertebral Discs Using a Novel Contrast Agent

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 4, December 2025.
This study introduces the first use of a contrast agent (potassium iodide) to enhance 3D imaging of the nucleus pulposus within an intact intervertebral disc (IVD). This method was used to demonstrate consistent 3D imaging of the nucleus pulposus across multiple animal models, including spine and tail IVDs.

Progerin accumulation in nucleus pulposus cells impairs mitochondrial function and induces intervertebral disc degeneration and therapeutic effects of sulforaphane

open access: yesTheranostics, 2019
Progerin, a truncated unprocessed lamin A protein, causes tissue aging and degeneration. In this study we explored the role of progerin in the pathogenesis of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD).

Lactate Metabolism in Intervertebral Disc Degeneration: Unveiling Novel Mechanisms Through Bioinformatics

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 4, December 2025.
This graphical abstract outlines the workflow to uncovering lactate metabolism‐related mechanisms in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). First, three IDD datasets (GSE34095: 3 IDD vs 3 control; GSE147383: 2 IDD vs 2 control; GSE70362: 16 IDD vs 8 control) were sourced from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and 73 lactate metabolism ...

Histological analysis of nucleus pulposus tissue from patients with lumbar disc herniation after condoliase administration

open access: yesJOR Spine
Background Condoliase is an enzyme used as a treatment for lumbar disc herniation (LDH). This enzyme degrades chondroitin sulfate (CS) in the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc (IVD).

Injury Induces More Severe Biomechanical Changes in Middle‐Aged and Geriatric Lumbar Spines in a Mouse Ex Vivo Model

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 4, December 2025.
Injury and age exhibited an interactive effect, resulting in greater biomechanical dysfunction in middle‐aged (12 months) and geriatric (24 months) mouse intervertebral discs (IVDs), associated with age‐related proteoglycan loss and collagen denaturation as shown by FTIR and histological analyses.

Polyethylene microplastics promote nucleus pulposus cell senescence by inducing oxidative stress via TLR4/NOX2 axis

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
This study aimed to detect and characterize microplastics in intervertebral disc and investigate their effects and molecular mechanism on intervertebral disc degeneration.

Sirt6 overexpression suppresses senescence and apoptosis of nucleus pulposus cells by inducing autophagy in a model of intervertebral disc degeneration

open access: yesCell Death and Disease, 2018
Treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) seeks to prevent senescence and death of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells. Previous studies have shown that sirt6 exerts potent anti-senescent and anti-apoptotic effects in models of age-related degenerative

Minimal Sustainability of Dedifferentiation by ROCK Inhibitor on Rat Nucleus Pulposus Cells In Vitro

open access: yesSpine Surgery and Related Research, 2019
Introduction: Intervertebral disc degeneration is strongly associated with low back pain. Cell transplantation has been extensively studied as a treatment option for intervertebral disc degeneration. It is often necessary to perform cell culture prior to

Mitochondrial NDUFA4L2 attenuates the apoptosis of nucleus pulposus cells induced by oxidative stress via the inhibition of mitophagy

open access: yesExperimental and Molecular Medicine, 2019
The main pathological mechanism of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the programmed apoptosis of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells. Oxidative stress is a significant cause of IVDD.

Circadian Rhythm: Biological Functions, Diseases, and Therapeutic Targets

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 6, Issue 11, November 2025.
This review offers a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms by which circadian rhythms modulate tissue homeostasis, alongside the associations between circadian disturbances and circadian rhythm‐related diseases. Furthermore, we offer insights into circadian rhythm‐regulating therapies, which may contribute to the development of novel strategies for ...
