Mandatory Provider Review And Pain Clinic Laws Reduce The Amounts Of Opioids Prescribed And Overdose Death Rates.

open access: yesHealth Affairs, 2016
To address the opioid overdose epidemic in the United States, states have implemented policies to reduce inappropriate opioid prescribing. These policies could affect the coincident heroin overdose epidemic by either driving the substitution of heroin ...

The cumulative analgesic effect of repeated electroacupuncture is modulated by Adora3 in the SCDH of mice with neuropathic pain

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Neuropathic pain management via repeated electroacupuncture. Abstract Background Existing remedial approaches for relieving neuropathic pain (NPP) are challenging and open the way for alternative therapeutic measures such as electroacupuncture (EA). The mechanism underlying the antinociceptive effects of repeated EA sessions, particularly concerning ...

In vivo toxic and lethal cardiorespiratory effects of a synthetic quaternary ammonium salt derivative of haloperidol in mice

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Hematoxylin–eosin (H&E) stains of the heart, liver, lung, and kidney show acute toxicity. Abstract Background To investigate the toxicity of N‐n‐butyl haloperidol iodide (F2), a quaternary ammonium salt derivative of haloperidol, in mice for potential therapeutic purposes. Methods The acute median lethal dose (LD50) of F2 was determined using the Bliss

Opioids excite dopamine neurons by hyperpolarization of local interneurons

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience, 1992
Increased activity of dopamine-containing neurons in the ventral tegmental area is necessary for the reinforcing effects of opioids and other abused drugs.

Impact of different anesthetic protocols during anesthesia for the establishment of a porcine model of acute kidney injury

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This study details the adaptations required to establish a long‐term anesthetic protocol in pigs. Three protocols were evaluated, with some causing malignant hyperthermia, hypoglycemia, or hemoynamic instability. The final protocol proved effective for developing a porcine AKI model requiring adequate arterial pressure maintenance.

Distinct Alterations of Inflammatory Biomarkers in Cluster Headache: A Case Control Study

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Investigate the immune system's role in cluster headache by analyzing cytokines in people with cluster headache and headache‐free controls, and explore if certain cytokines could predict a specific phenotype. Methods We measured 45 cytokines in adult participants from the Danish Cluster Headache Biobank in a prospective case–control setup ...

Hyperpolarization Modulation of the T‐type hCav3.2 Channel by Human Synenkephalin [1–53], a Shrew Neurotoxin Analogue without Paralytic Effects

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, Accepted Article.
Mammalian secreted venoms mainly consist of peptides and proteases used for defense or predation. Blarina paralytic peptides (BPPs), mealworm‐targeting neurotoxins from shrew, are very similar to human synenkephalin. This peptide is released from proenkephalin in the brain along with opioid peptides that mediate analgesic and antidepressant effects ...
