Mediation of Osseointegration, Osteoimmunology, and Osteoimmunologic Integration by Tregs and Macrophages: A Narrative Review. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Mol Sci
Osseointegration is the direct contact between living bone and a dental implant, with supporting evidence confirming the direct connection between bone and titanium, found using an electron microscope. However, the fundamental mechanisms and interconnections between the bone and titanium are not clearly understood.

Macrophage piezo1 senses mechanical force to drive osteoclastogenesis via ZBP1: Implications for bone remodelling therapy

open access: yesClinical and Translational Medicine, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
In the periodontal microenvironment, orthodontic mechanical force activates the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 on macrophages, triggering Ca2+ influx. The increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration drives the upregulation and activation of the innate immune sensor ZBP1, promoting the formation of Z‐NA.

Optimized Protocol for the Isolation of UHMWPE Wear Debris by Lyophilization and Chemometric Identification (EDS/PCA)

open access: yesJournal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials, Volume 114, Issue 5, May 2026.
An optimized protocol combining serum lyophilization, solid‐state alkaline digestion, and PCA‐assisted EDS analysis was validated for the analysis of UHMWPE wear debris. The method increased recovery yield by 20‐fold compared to liquid digestion and preserved particle morphology.

Survival, Retention, and Selective Proliferation of Lymphocytes Is Mediated by Gingival Fibroblasts

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontium, is characterized by osteoclast-mediated alveolar bone destruction. Gingival fibroblasts (GFs) present in the bone-lining mucosa have the capacity to activate the formation of osteoclasts,

Retrotransposons in Bone and Joint Diseases

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
This graphical abstract illustrates how epigenetic erosion during aging and disease reactivates retrotransposons, particularly endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), in musculoskeletal tissues. Their activation induces viral and molecular mimicry, triggering innate and adaptive immune responses and promoting cellular senescence.

Osteoclast biology and osteoimmunology

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Clinical Immunology, 2015
The bony skeleton enables the locomotive activity, the storage of calcium, and the harboring of the hematopoietic stem cells from which blood and immune cells are derived. The immune and skeletal systems share various molecules including cytokines, signaling molecules, transcription factors and membrane receptors.

Bone Formation and Maintenance in Oral Surgery: The Decisive Role of the Immune System—A Narrative Review of Mechanisms and Solutions

open access: yesBioengineering
Based on the evidence of a significant communication and connection pathway between the bone and immune systems, a new science has emerged: osteoimmunology.

GeneChip analysis for osteoimmunology

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Clinical Immunology, 2005
The interdisciplinary field called osteoimmunology has attracted much attention, due to the observations that bone destruction is caused by an abnormal activation of the immune system in rheumatoid arthritis, and mice lacking immunomodulatory molecules often exhibit an unexpected bone phenotype.
