Cisplatin ototoxicity and role of antioxidant on its prevention

open access: yes, 2020
Objective: Highlight the novelties of cisplatin ototoxicity and its prevention, focussing on the role of oxidative stress. Methods: We screened various electronic databases and selected the reports concerning clinical data and animal and in vitro models ...

Harnessing Trace Elements: Novel Radiosensitization Strategies for Enhanced Cancer Radiotherapy

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the core methods of comprehensive cancer treatment. Globally, more than 40% of cancer patients rely on radiotherapy to achieve tumor control, cure or palliative relief. However, radiation resistance, immunosuppression and normal tissue injury limit its clinical application.

Cellular Mechanisms of Ototoxicity

open access: yes, 2018
The auditory perception of sounds (environmental, vocal or music) is one of the 5 principal senses consciously monitored by our brains, and is crucial for many human endeavors as well as quality of life.

Noise‐Induced Hearing Loss: From Pathological Mechanisms to Therapeutic Interventions

open access: yesSensory Neuroscience, Volume 2, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Noise‐induced hearing loss (NIHL), a significant non‐genetic form of hearing impairment, is primarily managed through the use of hearing aids and cochlear implants. However, the fundamental pathological mechanisms underlying NIHL remain inadequately addressed.

Amikacin Concentrations Predictive of Ototoxicity in Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis Patients

open access: yes, 2015
Aminoglycosides, such as amikacin, are used to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. However, ototoxicity is a common problem and is monitored using peak and trough amikacin concentrations based on World Health Organization recommendations.

Progress On Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Mechanisms and Therapies

open access: yesSensory Neuroscience, Volume 2, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Hearing loss is the most common disabling disease among humans, which adversely affects human health. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) accounting for approximately 63% of all hearing loss cases. SNHL may be classified into age‐related hearing loss (ARHL), drug‐induced hearing loss (DIHL), noise‐induced hearing loss (NIHL), and sudden ...

Levosimendan ameliorates cisplatin-induced ototoxicity: Rat model

open access: yes, 2019
Objectives: Cisplatin is employed for chemotherapeutic purposes in several types of adult and pediatric cancer. However, side-effects including nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, gastrointestinal effects and neuropathy restrict the use of the drug due to their

AMPKα Silencing Prevents Kanamycin‐Induced Ototoxicity in an Acute Mouse Model

open access: yesSensory Neuroscience, Volume 2, Issue 2, June 2026.
Kanamycin plus furosemide (KM + FU) treatment (acute ototoxic model) causes AMPKα activation and rapidly induces cochlear outer hair cell (OHC) loss. Silencing AMPKα1 via posterior semicircular canal injection 48 h before KM + FU treatment reduces this damage, preserving OHCs and hearing.

Pharmacogenetics of drug-induced ototoxicity caused by aminoglycosides and cisplatin

open access: yes, 2017
Aminoglycosides and the anticancer drug cisplatin can cause permanent hearing loss, which impacts patients’ quality of life and results in considerable subsequent costs.
