Tetrandrine Prevents Neomycin-Induced Ototoxicity by Promoting Steroid Biosynthesis

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2022
Aminoglycoside antibiotics are widely used for the treatment of serious acute infections, life-threatening sepsis, and tuberculosis, but all aminoglycosides cause side effects, especially irreversible ototoxicity.

Ototoxicity of Amikacin [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 1976
Amikacin was used in 77 treatment courses at a dosage of ≥7.5 mg/kg every 8 h, and patients were monitored for ototoxicity by following serial audiograms, serum creatinine, and amikacin blood levels. Patients were leukopenic (58), were infected by gentamicin-resistant organisms (11), or had cystic fibrosis (8).

Genome-wide analyses of platinum-induced ototoxicity in childhood cancer patients: Results of GO-CAT and United Kingdom MAGIC consortia

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2023
Hearing loss (ototoxicity) is a major adverse effect of cisplatin and carboplatin chemotherapy. The aim of this study is to identify novel genetic variants that play a role in platinum-induced ototoxicity.

Re-telling the story of aminoglycoside ototoxicity: tales from sub-Saharan Africa

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology
BackgroundAminoglycosides, such as Streptomycin, are cheap, potent antibiotics widely used Sub-Saharan Africa. However, aminoglycosides are the commonest cause of ototoxicity.

Practice of Monitoring Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity by Audiology, ENT, and Oncology Specialists: A Survey-Based Study in a Single Italian Medical Center

open access: yesAudiology Research, 2023
Ototoxic drugs can result in hearing loss and tinnitus. Early detection of the ototoxic process can help minimize or prevent these consequences. The American Speech–Language–Hearing Association has provided guidelines for monitoring ototoxicity, whereas ...

High incidence of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in paediatric patients in the Western Cape, South Africa

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Oncology, 2018
Background: Fourteen million new cancer cases are reported annually, and up to 10% of those involve children below 15 years. Cisplatin, a commonly used anti-cancer drug for its high success rate, is associated with ototoxicity.

Insight into the current practice of ototoxicity monitoring during cisplatin therapy

open access: yesJournal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 2021
Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the current state of ototoxicity monitoring for patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy in an academic medical center with particular attention to how closely monitoring adheres to national ototoxicity ...

After surviving cancer, what about late life effects of the cure?

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2016
The widely used chemotherapeutic cisplatin causes ototoxicity as late‐term side effect. In this issue, Benkafadar et al (2017) decipher the mechanism of cisplatin‐induced ototoxicity and provide evidence that transient inhibition of p53 ameliorates ...

Cellular glutathione content in the organ of Corti and its role during ototoxicity.

open access: yes, 2015
Glutathione (GSH) is the major scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inside cells. We used live confocal imaging in order to clarify the role of GSH in the biology of the organ of Corti, the sensory epithelium of the cochlea, before, during and ...

Predictive model for aminoglycoside induced ototoxicity

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology
BackgroundIrreversible hearing loss is a well-known adverse effect of aminoglycosides, however, inability to accurately predict ototoxicity is a major limitation in clinical care.
