This chapter is a literature review of oxazole chemistry covering the period from 1995 to 2006. It includes experimental structural methods for oxazole characterizations, a brief discussion on the thermodynamic aspects of the heterocycle, and a detailed section on the reactivity and the synthesis of the heterocycle.

Mercuration of oxazole derivatives is studied. As a result mono- and disubstituted mercury derivatives, hitherto not described in the literature, are obtained. The ability of the oxazole ring to undergo mercuration decreases in the order C-5>C-4 ≥C-2.
