TcI isolates of Trypanosoma cruzi exploit the antioxidant network for enhanced intracellular survival in macrophages and virulence in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Trypanosoma cruzi species is categorized into six discrete typing units (TcI to TcVI) of which TcI is most abundantly noted in the sylvatic transmission cycle and considered the major cause of human disease. In our study, the TcI strains Colombiana (COL),

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Effect of thiamine pyrophosphate on retinopathy induced by hyperglycemia in rats: A biochemical and pathological evaluation

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2016
Purpose: Information is lacking on the protective effects of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) against hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy in rats. This study investigated the biochemical and histopathological aspects of the effect of TPP on hyperglycemia ...

Intrazeolite synthesis of polythiophene chains [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Adsorption of thiophene and 3-methylthiophene into the channel system of transition metal-containing zeolites Y and mordenite results in oxidative polymerization to give encapsulated chains of polythiophene and poly(3-methylthiophene)

Oxidative Shielding or Oxidative Stress? [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 2012
In this review I report evidence that the mainstream field of oxidative damage biology has been running fast in the wrong direction for more than 50 years. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and chronic oxidative changes in membrane lipids and proteins found in many chronic diseases are not the result of accidental damage.

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Mfd Protects Against Oxidative Stress in Bacillus Subtilis Independently of its Canonical Function in DNA Repair [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Previous reports showed that mutagenesis in nutrient-limiting conditions is dependent on Mfd in Bacillus subtilis. Mfd initiates one type of transcription-coupled repair (TCR); this type of repair is known to target bulky lesions, like those ...

Overview of molecular signatures of senescence and associated resources: pros and cons

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells can enter a stress response state termed cellular senescence that is involved in various diseases and aging. Detecting these cells is challenging due to the lack of universal biomarkers. This review presents the current state of senescence identification, from biomarkers to molecular signatures, compares tools and approaches, and highlights ...

The Paradoxical Leishmanicidal Effects of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)-Mimetic Tempol in Leishmania braziliensis Infection in vitro

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2019
Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by protozoans of the genus Leishmania. The macrophage is the resident cell in which the parasite replicates and it is important to identify new compounds that can aid in parasite elimination since the drugs ...
