Editorial on Anticancer Antioxidants

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2021
The current concepts of biomedicine consider oxidative stress to be one of crucial pathophysiological processes behind major stress- and age-associated diseases, including cancer [...]

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Effects of an Exercise Test on Inflammation and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

open access: yesProceedings, 2019
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by an increase in oxidative stress and chroniclow-grade inflammation. The effects of an exercise test at 60–70% of the maximum capacity wasevaluated on inflammatory and antioxidant response in elderly people ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Nrm1 is a bistable switch connecting cell cycle progression to transcriptional control

open access: yesEMBO Reports
Entry into the cell cycle requires activation of G1 cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and the G1/S transcriptional program. In fission yeast, the MBF complex is the main transcription factor driving early cell-cycle gene expression.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Mancozeb impairs mitochondrial and bioenergetic activity in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yesHeliyon, 2021
Mancozeb (MZ) is a broad-spectrum fungicide used worldwide in several crops. Neurological disorders in humans and animals have been associated with exposure to this compound by mechanisms still not fully understood.
