Chronic alcohol abuse is implicated in the oxidative stress and the changes in the neurotrophic factor receptor expression in the human CNS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Alcohol abuse and alcoholism induce brain damage, and, in some cases, neurodegeneration. The pathogenesis of the alcohol-induced injury of the CNS is a complex process in which oxidative stress plays an essential role.

Nerve Growth Factor is Sufficient to Cause Multiple Osteoarthritis‐Relevant Pathologic Features in Naïve Murine Knee Joints

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective Nerve growth factor (NGF), a key mediator of pain, is increased in osteoarthritic (OA) joints. Antibodies against NGF show analgesic effects in painful knee OA, but clinical development was stopped because of side effects in the joints. Knowledge about the biologic effects of NGF on joint tissues is limited. Therefore, we explored the effects

An antisense-long-noncoding-RNA modulates p75NTR expression levels during neuronal polarization

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Proper polarization of newly generated neurons is a critical process for neural network formation and brain development. The pan-neurotrophin p75NTR receptor plays a key role in this process localizing asymmetrically in one of the ...

Small molecule, non-peptide p75 ligands inhibit Abeta-induced neurodegeneration and synaptic impairment.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2008
The p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75(NTR)) is expressed by neurons particularly vulnerable in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We tested the hypothesis that non-peptide, small molecule p75(NTR) ligands found to promote survival signaling might prevent Abeta ...

Chronic nerve growth factor exposure increases apoptosis in a model of in vitro induced conjunctival myofibroblasts. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
In the conjunctiva, repeated or prolonged exposure to injury leads to tissue remodeling and fibrosis associated with dryness, lost of corneal transparency and defect of ocular function.

Nerve growth factor receptors in dementia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background/aim: Nerve growth factor (NGF) promotes the survival and differentiation of sensory and sympathetic neurons. Several studies have found that certain neuropathological factors stimulate NGF receptor expression and release the truncated nerve ...

p75 Neurotrophin Receptor in the Skin: Beyond Its Neurotrophic Function

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2017
p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR), also known as CD271, is the low-affinity receptor that, together with the tyrosine kinase receptor tropomyosin-receptor kinase (Trk), mediate neurotrophin (NT) functions.

Combinatorial expression of glial transcription factors induces Schwann cell‐specific gene expression in mouse embryonic fibroblasts

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Schwann cells provide peripheral nerve trophic support, myelinate axons, and assist in repair. However, Schwann cell repair capacity is limited by chronic injury, disease, and aging. Schwann cell reprogramming is a cellular conversion strategy that could provide a renewable cell supply to repair injured nerves.

Neurotrophin receptor p75NTR mediates Huntington's disease-associated synaptic and memory dysfunction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Learning and memory deficits are early clinical manifestations of Huntington's disease (HD). These cognitive impairments have been mainly associated with frontostriatal HD pathology; however, compelling evidence provided by several HD murine models ...

The p75 Neurotrophin Receptor Interacts with Multiple MAGE Proteins [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2002
The p75 neurotrophin receptor has been implicated in diverse aspects of neurotrophin signaling, but the mechanisms by which its effects are mediated are not well understood. Here we identify two MAGE proteins, necdin and MAGE-H1, as interactors for the intracellular domain of p75 and show that the interaction is enhanced by ligand stimulation.
