Chemical agents to control biofilm formation in step 1 of care—Toothpastes and mouthwashes/concepts and challenges

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Maintaining optimal oral hygiene is important for overall oral care, ensuring the well‐being of teeth and their surrounding tissues. In addition, it promotes fresh breath and a pleasing smile. A key element of oral self‐care is the daily use of toothpaste during regular brushing.

Lactate potentiates NMDA receptor currents via an intracellular redox mechanism targeting GluN2B subunits: implications for synaptic plasticity

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Astrocyte‐derived lactate enhances neuronal NMDA receptor (NMDAR) function and synaptic plasticity through a redox‐ and CaMKII‐dependent mechanism. Lactate enters neurons via monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) and is oxidized by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) to pyruvate, generating NADH and increasing the intracellular NADH/NAD ...

Amyloid β alters vascular CaV1.2 channel spatiotemporal properties

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Amyloid‐β1‐42 (Aβ1‐42) triggers a male‐specific signalling cascade influencing CaV1.2 spatiotemporal properties in cerebral vascular smooth muscle. The signalling pathway involves NADPH oxidase (NOX)‐derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) activation of protein kinase C (PKC). Aβ1‐42 can also activate protein kinase A (PKA).

RXR Gamma Enables Oligodendrocyte Differentiation by Suppressing Sonic Hedgehog Signaling

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 6, June 2026.
Using pharmacogenetic approaches, Baldassarro et al. demonstrate that RXRγ suppresses the SHH signaling pathway in OPCs to ensure their efficient differentiation following T3 stimulation. Accordingly, Rxrg−/− OPCs displayed compromised differentiation which was normalized by the pharmacological inhibition of the hyperactive SHH pathway.

Viscoelastic and Morphologic Changes in the Lumbar Intervertebral Discs of the 5xFAD Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2026.
The intervertebral discs (IVDs) from mice with amyloid pathologies are larger, flatter, and exhibit increased energy absorption, making these IVDs more susceptible to damage. This heightened vulnerability may predispose elderly individuals with AD to disc injuries, accelerating IVD degeneration and spinal pain. ABSTRACT Background Chronic low back pain,

Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cells Ameliorate Autism‐Like Behaviors in a Valproic Acid‐Induced Mouse Model via the IGF‐1/Akt Signaling Pathway

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
Human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells (hUC‐MSCs) were intraventricularly transplanted into valproic acid (VPA)‐induced autistic mice. hUC‐MSCs significantly ameliorated core ASD‐like behaviors, including social deficits and repetitive behaviors.

Panacis Quinquefolii Radix Polysaccharides Alleviate Depressive‐Like Behaviors in Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress‐Induced Mice by Suppressing Complement C1Q/C3‐Mediated Microglial Synaptic Pruning and Modulating Gut Microbiota

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 4, April 2026.
XYS1 ameliorates depressive‐like behaviors in CUMS mice via the gut‐brain axis by inhibiting complement activation, suppressing microglial phagocytosis, restoring gut microbiota, and alleviating inflammation. ABSTRACT Aims Panax quinquefolius Radix (American ginseng) is a medicinal herb used for its neuroprotective and tonic effects.

Cigarette Smoke Extract Alters the Inflammatory Secretome of Osteoarthritis‐Affected Synovium Increasing Joint Tissue Oxidative Stress in an Indirect Co‐Culture Model

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Research, Volume 44, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Dysregulation of synovial homeostasis has been implicated in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA), but the effects that cigarette smoking has on OA‐affected synovium have yet to be studied. To further the knowledge on how cigarette smoke alters OA progression, we investigated the direct effects of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on ...
