High paracellular nutrient absorption in intact bats is associated with high paracellular permeability in perfused intestinal segments [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 2014
Abstract Water-soluble nutrients are absorbed by the small intestine via transcellular and paracellular mechanisms. Based on a few previous studies, the capacity for paracellular nutrient absorption seems greater in flying mammals than in nonflying mammals, but there has been little investigation of the mechanisms driving this difference ...

Opinion: Gavage Administration of MXene as a Route‐Specific Alternative to Intravenous Injection into the Bloodstream of Laboratory Animals for Reducing Systemic Nanotoxicity Risks in Immunosuppression and Post‐Transplantation Models with Bile Acid Modification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Recent studies reported immunosuppressive properties of specific MXene nanomaterials. Their intravenous injection into the bloodstream of laboratory animals has been a common delivery method to suppress systemic inflammation and prevent transplant rejection.

Botulinum Toxin Type A Inhibits Submandibular Secretion via the ERK/miR-124-3p/Specificity Protein 1/Claudin-1 Axis

open access: yesCells
Botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) is widely used for the treatment of sialorrhea; however, its mechanism remains unclear. Tight junctions (TJs) are limiting factors for salivary secretion through the paracellular pathway in the salivary gland, among which ...

CRP Deficiency Rescues Periodontitis‐Induced Hippocampal Neurogenesis Impairment by Suppressing OPC‐Derived BMP4 Signaling in Rats

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Chronic periodontitis elevates circulating CRP, which enters the hippocampus to upregulate BMP4 in oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), thereby impairing neurogenesis and inducing anxiety/depression‐like behaviors in rats. Counteracting this pathway, CRP deficiency helps confer functional resilience to OPCs.

Protective actions of des-acylated ghrelin on brain injury and blood-brain barrier disruption after stroke in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The major ghrelin forms, acylated ghrelin and des-acylated ghrelin, are novel gastrointestinal hormones. Moreover, emerging evidence indicates that these peptides may have other functions including neuro- and vaso-protection.

An on-chip model of protein paracellular and transcellular permeability in the microcirculation.

open access: yesBiomaterials, 2019
Recent therapeutic success of large-molecule biologics has led to intense interest in assays to measure with precision their transport across the vascular endothelium and into the target tissue.

Piperazine‐Functionalized Nanoparticles Enable Oral Insulin Delivery in Obese Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Biologics have gained prominence as a rapidly advancing therapeutic modality for a diverse spectrum of medical conditions. Nonetheless, they are predominantly administered parenterally due to poor absorption through the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, repeated injections of biologics such as insulin cause injection pain, leading to dose ...

Testing the relationship between gut permeability, elevation of systemic lipopolysaccharides and chronic disease : A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The aim of my thesis was to test whether an increase in the permeability of the gut is accompanied by an increase in the level of systemic lipopolysaccharides (LPS), also referred to as endotoxin.

Claudins in intestines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Intestines are organs that not only digest food and absorb nutrients, but also provide a defense barrier against pathogens and noxious agents ingested. Tight junctions (TJs) are the most apical component of the junctional complex, providing one form of ...

Modulation of urinary bladder paracellular permeability by stretch

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2012
In response to bladder filling and voiding, umbrella cells undergo changes in cell‐shape and vesicular trafficking. However, it is not known how filling/voiding impact paracellular transport in these cells. To investigate how changes in umbrella cell stretch affect paracellular permeability, bladder mucosa was mounted in Ussing ...
