How allosteric control of Staphylococcus aureus penicillin binding protein 2a enables methicillin resistance and physiological function

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2013
Significance Penicillin binding protein 2a imparts to the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. Our structural characterization of the allosteric basis governing its resistance mechanism identifies a basis for the ...

KMT2A degradation is observed in decitabine‐responsive acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We demonstrate that decitabine (DEC) not only degrades the DNA methyltransferase DNMT1 but also the leukemic driver lysine methyltransferase KMT2A likely due to structural similarity of the DNA‐binding CXXC domains. DEC influences KMT2A downstream processes and synergizes with menin inhibitor revumenib (REV) to decrease leukemic cell proliferation, and

Detection of pbp2b and ermB genes in clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2008
Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major human pathogen. The emergence of penicillin resistant strains since the 1970s has been life threatening and the evolution of the bacteria have enabled itself to develop resistance to many other antibiotics ...

Antibacterial effect of glass ionomer cement containing metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, or penicillin V on Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesمجله دانشگاه علوم پزشکی بیرجند, 2023
Background and Aims: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is used in atraumatic restorative treatment, full crown cementation, and root lesion repair. Glass ionomer cement can prevent secondary infections if it has antibacterial properties.

Polyfunctional CD8+CD226+RUNX2hi effector T cells are diminished in advanced stages of chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CD226+CD8+ T cells express elevated levels of RUNX2, exhibit higher proliferation capacity, cytokines and cytolytic molecules expression, and migratory capacity. In contrast, CD226−CD8+ T cells display an exhausted phenotype associated with the increased expression of co‐inhibitory receptors and impaired effector functions.

Cystatin A promotes the antitumor activity of T helper type 1 cells and dendritic cells in murine models of pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a disease with very poor prognosis due to therapeutic limitations. We investigated the antitumor effects of cystatin A (CSTA) in PDAC murine models. We are first to confirm that CSTA enhances T helper type 1‐mediated antitumor effects through promotion of dendritic cells and M1 macrophage activity. CSTA can be

The matrix method of representation, analysis and classification of long genetic sequences [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
The article is devoted to a matrix method of comparative analysis of long nucleotide sequences by means of a presentation of each sequence in a form of three digital binary sequences. This method uses biochemical attributes of nucleotides and it also uses a possibility of presentation of every whole set of n-mers in a form of one of members of a ...

Etoposide‐induced cancer cell death: roles of mitochondrial VDAC1 and calpain, and resistance mechanisms

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The complex mode of action of the topoisomerase II inhibitor etoposide in triggering apoptosis involves several mechanisms: overexpression of the mitochondrial protein VDAC1, leading to its oligomerization and formation of a large channel that mediates the release of pro‐apoptotic protein; and overexpression of the apoptosis regulators p53, Bax, and ...

Automated image segmentation and division plane detection in single live Staphylococcus aureus cells [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Staphylococcus aureus is a coccal bacterium, which divides by binary fission. After division the cells remain attached giving rise to small clusters, with a characteristic 'bunch of grapes' morphology. S. aureus is an important human pathogen and this, combined with the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant strains, such as Methicillin ...
