Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a poor prognosis due to the rapid disease progression and early metastasis. The metabolism program determines the proliferation and metastasis of HCC; however, the metabolic approach to treat HCC remains uncovered. Here,

Ribose 5-phosphate isomerase B knockdown compromises Trypanosoma brucei bloodstream form infectivity. [PDF]
Ribose 5-phosphate isomerase is an enzyme involved in the non-oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway, and catalyzes the inter-conversion of D-ribose 5-phosphate and D-ribulose 5-phosphate.

Efficient production of mycosporine-like amino acids, natural sunscreens, in Yarrowia lipolytica
Background Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), including shinorine and porphyra-334, are gaining attention as safe natural sunscreens. The production of MAAs has been achieved in diverse microbial hosts, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

TRIM21 and PHLDA3 negatively regulate the crosstalk between the PI3K/AKT pathway and PPP metabolism
The PI3K/AKT signalling pathway regulates cancer metabolism. Here, the authors show a reciprocal positive feedback crosstalk between the PI3K/AKT and pentose phosphate pathway which promotes tumourigenesis.

The pentose phosphate pathway inTrypanosoma cruzi [PDF]
The pentose phosphate pathway has been studied in Trypanosoma cruzi, Clone CL Brener. Functioning of the pathway was demonstrated in epimastigotes by measuring the evolution of (14)CO(2) from [1-(14)C] or [6-(14)C]D-glucose. Glucose consumption through the PPP increased from 9.9% to 20.4% in the presence of methylene blue, which mimics oxidative stress.
