6-Phosphogluconolactonase Promotes Hepatocellular Carcinogenesis by Activating Pentose Phosphate Pathway

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a poor prognosis due to the rapid disease progression and early metastasis. The metabolism program determines the proliferation and metastasis of HCC; however, the metabolic approach to treat HCC remains uncovered. Here,

Ribose 5-phosphate isomerase B knockdown compromises Trypanosoma brucei bloodstream form infectivity. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2015
Ribose 5-phosphate isomerase is an enzyme involved in the non-oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway, and catalyzes the inter-conversion of D-ribose 5-phosphate and D-ribulose 5-phosphate.

Inhibition of ERRα Prevents Mitochondrial Pyruvate Uptake Exposing NADPH-Generating Pathways as Targetable Vulnerabilities in Breast Cancer

open access: yesCell Reports, 2019
Summary: Most cancer cells exhibit metabolic flexibility, enabling them to withstand fluctuations in intratumoral concentrations of glucose (and other nutrients) and changes in oxygen availability.

Efficient production of mycosporine-like amino acids, natural sunscreens, in Yarrowia lipolytica

open access: yesBiotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts, 2023
Background Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), including shinorine and porphyra-334, are gaining attention as safe natural sunscreens. The production of MAAs has been achieved in diverse microbial hosts, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

TRIM21 and PHLDA3 negatively regulate the crosstalk between the PI3K/AKT pathway and PPP metabolism

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
The PI3K/AKT signalling pathway regulates cancer metabolism. Here, the authors show a reciprocal positive feedback crosstalk between the PI3K/AKT and pentose phosphate pathway which promotes tumourigenesis.

Cannabidiol attenuates OGD/R-induced damage by enhancing mitochondrial bioenergetics and modulating glucose metabolism via pentose-phosphate pathway in hippocampal neurons

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2017
Deficient bioenergetics and diminished redox conservation have been implicated in the development of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. In this study, the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of cannabidiol (CBD), a nonpsychotropic ...

The pentose phosphate pathway inTrypanosoma cruzi [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2004
The pentose phosphate pathway has been studied in Trypanosoma cruzi, Clone CL Brener. Functioning of the pathway was demonstrated in epimastigotes by measuring the evolution of (14)CO(2) from [1-(14)C] or [6-(14)C]D-glucose. Glucose consumption through the PPP increased from 9.9% to 20.4% in the presence of methylene blue, which mimics oxidative stress.

Myostatin Knockout Limits Exercise-Induced Reduction in Bovine Erythrocyte Oxidative Stress by Enhancing the Efficiency of the Pentose Phosphate Pathway

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
Moderate exercise can strengthen the body, however, exhaustive exercise generates large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although erythrocytes have antioxidant systems that quickly eliminate ROS, erythrocytes become overwhelmed by ROS when the ...

A Defective Pentose Phosphate Pathway Reduces Inflammatory Macrophage Responses during Hypercholesterolemia

open access: yesCell Reports, 2018
Summary: Metabolic reprogramming has emerged as a crucial regulator of immune cell activation, but how systemic metabolism influences immune cell metabolism and function remains to be investigated. To investigate the effect of dyslipidemia on immune cell
