AGRICULTURE IN A SOCIALIST CITY: Towards an Alter‐Urban Political Ecology

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Urban political ecology has developed as a critique of capitalist urbanization. This article develops the concept of alter‐urban political ecology to define urban environments emerging not from capitalist urbanization but from efforts to transform it. Drawing on archival research and ethnographic fieldwork in five urban farms in socialist Cuba,

Rootstock genotype influences heat stress-disrupted hormonal regulation and physiological status in pepper ovaries

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Risen temperatures result in a notable decline in pepper yield, predominantly due to their direct impact on fruit set. The female gametophyte has been less studied than male reproductive organs but proven to be heat-sensitive.

The MADS-Box Transcription Factor CaRIN Positively Regulates Chlorophyll Degradation During Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Fruit Ripening by Repressing the Expression of CaLhcb-P4

open access: yesPlants
Pepper (Capsicum spp.) is an important global vegetable and spice, with fruit color being a key determinant of its commercial quality. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying pepper fruit color are still not fully understood.

A preventive strategy for the control of aphids in sweet pepper using lacewings and micrococcinelid beetles

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Aphids pose a serious risk to horticultural crops. Current biocontrol strategies often fail due to the poor establishment of natural enemies when aphids are scarce. We evaluated the potential of two aphidophagous predators, Micromus variegatus and Scymnus interruptus, to be used as preventive biocontrol agents, released before aphid infestation.

Ant–aphid mutualism: the influence of Tapinoma ibericum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) on Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphidae) control by commercial and spontaneous natural enemies

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The mutualism between Tapinoma ibericum ants and Aphis gossypii disrupts the biological control exerted by Aphidius colemani in greenhouse peppers. Ant exclusion increased parasitism and the presence of most natural enemies, although Aphidoletes aphidimyza was more abundant with ants.

Ultra‐processed food supply in hospitals: A cross‐sectional analysis of Australian hospitals using cook fresh foodservices

open access: yesNutrition &Dietetics, EarlyView.
Abstract Aim Ultra‐processed foods have been associated with a range of adverse health and environmental impacts, yet their supply in health‐promoting settings like hospitals remains largely unexamined. This study aimed to assess and quantify the proportion of ultra‐processed foods utilised in a sample of Australian hospitals using cook fresh ...
