Effects of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species on actomyosin and their implications for muscle contractility [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Experimental evidence accumulated during recent years is pointing out that numerous pathological conditions in skeletal and cardiac muscle are associated with an oxidative stress-induced muscle injury.

Insulin facilitates entry of calcium ions into human and murine erythrocytes via Piezo1: a newly identified mechanism with implications for type 2 diabetes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Despite being enucleated, mammalian red blood cells (RBCs) possess complex signaling mechanisms. Here, we show that insulin signals through the mechanosensitive channel Piezo1 to promote influx of calcium ions. This newly identified pathway is disrupted in a murine model of type 2 diabetes and may contribute to driving circulatory deficits in prevalent

Immunogenic Modulations Induced by Prospective Anti-Malarial Herbal Extracts in Murine Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Keeping in view the ever increasing problem of drug resistance and affordability of the antimalarial drugs by the poor mass, herbal medicines can become an important and alternative sustainable strategy for malaria treatment.

Genome Characterisation of Priestia megaterium mj1212 and Its Synergistic Effect With N‐Acetylglucosamine in Enhancing Soybean Salt Stress Tolerance

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As a sustainable alternative to inorganic fertilisers, the combined application of plant‐growth promoting microbes and organic amendments offers an efficient biological approach to enhance plant growth under stress conditions. In this study, we present the complete genome sequence and functional annotation of the soil bacterial strain Priestia

Selectivity and anti‐tumor immune elevation by vascular‐targeted photodynamic therapy of mouse orthotopic bladder cancer model

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Vascular‐targeted photodynamic therapy (VTP) using the photosensitizer WST11 is a non‐surgical tumor ablation approach. Light activation of WST11 leads to excessive generation of reactive oxygen species, which causes tumor vascular arrest, followed by destruction of tumor blood vessels and tumor necrosis.
