Cysteine hydropersulfide reduces lipid peroxidation and protects against myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury - Are endogenous persulfides mediators of ischaemic preconditioning?

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2023
Earlier studies revealed the presence of cysteine persulfide (CysSSH) and related polysulfide species in various mammalian tissues. CysSSH has both antioxidant and oxidant properties, modulates redox-dependent signal transduction and has been shown to ...

Using resonance synchronous spectroscopy to characterize the reactivity and electrophilicity of biologically relevant sulfane sulfur

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2019
Sulfane sulfur is common inside cells, playing both regulatory and antioxidant roles. However, there are unresolved issues about its chemistry and biochemistry.

S-sulfhydration of SIRT3 combats BMSC senescence and ameliorates osteoporosis via stabilizing heterochromatic and mitochondrial homeostasis

open access: yesPharmacological Research, 2023
Senescence of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) is one of the leading causes of osteoporosis. SIRT3, an essential NAD-dependent histone deacetylase, is highly correlated with BMSC senescence-mediated bone degradation and mitochondrial ...

Catalytic Sulfur‐Atom Transfer Enabled by a Bis(disulfide) Titanium Complex

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Multi‐electron transformations with titanium are underexplored due to limited access to low‐valent precursors. The four‐electron activation of elemental sulfur by a Ti(IV) complex yields a rare titanium bis(disulfide) complex, enabling the efficient catalytic synthesis of isothiocyanates from isonitriles under mild conditions.

Cysteine persulfides and polysulfides produced by exchange reactions with H2S protect SH-SY5Y cells from methylglyoxal-induced toxicity through Nrf2 activation

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2017
Many physiological functions of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have been reported in mammalian cells over the last 20 years. These physiological effects have been ascertained through in vitro treatment of cells with Na2S or NaHS, both of which are precursors of ...

Oral Administration of Glutathione Trisulfide Increases Reactive Sulfur Levels in Dorsal Root Ganglion and Ameliorates Paclitaxel-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy in Mice

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2022
Peripheral neuropathy is a dose-limiting side effect of chemotherapy with paclitaxel. Paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy (PIPN) is typically characterized by a predominantly sensory neuropathy presenting with allodynia, hyperalgesia and spontaneous

Mining proteomes for zinc finger persulfidation. [PDF]

open access: yesRSC Chem Biol
A meta-analysis of 22 persulfide-specific proteomics datasets reveals widespread persulfidation of zinc finger proteins across various species, highlighting the role of persulfidation as an important post-translational modification.

Stimuli‐responsive nanostructured hydrogen sulfide donors for enhanced cancer treatments

open access: yesSmart Molecules, EarlyView.
Three typical kinds of stimuli‐responsive nanostructured hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donors are reviewed. The nanostructures ensure precise delivery of H2S to the lesion site and regulate the release behavior. The H2S‐based gas therapy has been used to synergize with other cancer treatment modalities, achieving enhanced efficacy while reducing side effects.
